Ouch. He's on contract thru the end of the 2029-30 season. I saw something about a buyout being $10 million. That's a lot for PC to have to eat. Curious how they'll fund that.

There's an alternate timeline out there where Schmidt accepted the UMass job 4 years ago. Wonder where the program would be today if that had been the case.

All the reports leading up to the "retirement" announcement indicated he was being forced out. I don't see any reason to think that didn't happen.

They were 14-18 in 22-23 and 15-16 this year, but otherwise he had 20+ win seasons each year since the Covid season. And we know the success he had prior to that as well. I don't think this guy just ups and retires, especially considering he was in the running for UMass just 4 years ago, and I think recently BC too.

His 20 years started with 4 very bad years, before several mediocre years that saw one surprising A10 tournament championship. After a few more mediocre years, Schmidt's teams had 5 good years, but these last 3 years of struggle for the 63-year-old coach, especially their poor showing this season were enough.

^ I am not. I have no idea how he recruited and won at that school. I think the phrase "doing more with less" was probably trademarked by Jon Rothstein in reference to Schmidt.
