Re: Time for a new coach
Why don't one of you guys start a petition drive to replace the coach?

I think it came out of the article in the globe on the highest paid state employees around $800,000. He is worth more.

^ He’s underpaid compared to his hoops colleague.

He's done nothing but bemoan the NIL era we're in, and that ain't changing anytime soon. This is probably his last stop in D-I.UMassFan99 wrote: Sun Mar 01, 2026 8:22 am He’ll get a job. He can blame it on the uncertainty around the MAC and program etc. coaching carousel.

Agreed Frank is a dinosaur from a bygone era in the NCAA. I don't think he has any interest in adapting to NIL and the transfer portal. This is probably the end of the road for him as coach and I'd say he definitely goes into TV.MikeUMA wrote: Mon Mar 02, 2026 1:22 amHe's done nothing but bemoan the NIL era we're in, and that ain't changing anytime soon. Respectfully disagree. I could be wrong but I don't see that happening.
I know he did a stint on the March Madness sets in March '22 before he landed our gig, but I don't see it as a permanent job.

Agree. Why would the next school want to deal with the same BS?MikeUMA wrote: Mon Mar 02, 2026 1:22 amHe's done nothing but bemoan the NIL era we're in, and that ain't changing anytime soon. The only job I can see Frank getting is a school like FIU.

Re: Time for a new coach
I wonder what you guys would say if you were around in the 80's when we won very few games?

What are you getting at?Berkman wrote: Mon Mar 02, 2026 12:01 pm I wonder what you guys would say if you were around in the 80's when we won very few games?
Times were different, and I think the average of 200 people in the stands answers your question on that.

Re: Time for a new coach
I wonder if you were comparing UMass games of the 1940's in the 80's... you weren't, because it's a stupid comparison.Berkman wrote: Mon Mar 02, 2026 12:01 pm I wonder what you guys would say if you were around in the 80's when we won very few games?

Re: Time for a new coach
If the media (social, mainstream, PODS etc...) world as it is now, existed in the 80's, the complaining would be the same as it is now. You only hear more about it now because there are thousands of platforms to express feelings.Berkman wrote: Mon Mar 02, 2026 12:01 pm I wonder what you guys would say if you were around in the 80's when we won very few games?

As Huey Lewis and the News once said, Bad is Bad. Doesn't matter if it's today, the 1980's, or the 1940's. He hasn't gotten the job done in 4 years, his act is tiresome, and the last few games definitely feel like he's punted on this season.

Re: Time for a new coach
how would you rank the coaches after Cal here?
Here's how I see it:
1) Travis Ford - definitely built it for him and his resume alone, but still a couple of really good years from him
2) Bruiser Flint - still had a tough defensive mentality. Probably could've used an offensive coordinator.
3) Derek Kellogg - brought some talented guys in and made a tourney, cupboard was bare when he got here. Some real head scratching losses though.
4) Frank Martin - Seems to be getting worse every year though.
5) Steve Lappas - at least he knew how to beat UConn.
6) Matt McCall - Nice guy, knowledgeable. Don't know why he couldn't repeat Chattanooga success.

Actual coaching? Ford.
Success? Bruiser.
Actual success without Cal recruited players? DK.
Best win? Lappas.
In all seriousness, I have trouble ranking them because I find it hard to weigh the actual coaching vs the level of success vs tenure.
Either way, none of this matters until we have a change at the top of the current Department.
