That perception is overblown and been changing for years. People recognize that UMass is a great school, the #1 Public University in New England and the admission statistics reflect that. There's plenty of room for improvement obviously. Now with MAC membership, getting the basketball and football programs synchronized and back on track will happen with proper leadership, commitment and planning.tdmass wrote: Fri Nov 21, 2025 2:28 pm I believe that the Flagship State School in Massachusetts gets less respect from the state and local government and hence the people than any state in the country! Re: 2026 Season
Then how come WSJ ranked Lowell as the #1 public university in Massachusetts and URI as the #1 public U in New England?
They're playing MACsketball. We suck at MACsketball.

This might be for different reason than academic achievement, etc.Sheck wrote: Fri Nov 21, 2025 11:45 pm Then how come WSJ ranked Lowell as the #1 public university in Massachusetts and URI as the #1 public U in New England?

Jack you are answering your own question..... This state and region only gives a shit about academics, or at least prioritizes it many sport ahead of sports. This is an intellectual state not a sports fanatic state.Jack wrote: Fri Nov 21, 2025 6:36 pmThat perception is overblown and been changing for years. I do not disagree that proper leadership can stabilize things but who the fuck is that? Nobody currently in position here.... Thorr is a great guy, but he is not aq magician and there are still too many people above him to keep him reigned in. Until fuckign Bamfraud is gone, this program will underachieve. And if we have an administration that cannot see and act upon that I still question them too....
Re: 2026 Season
As for the governor alum thing: probably never going to happen. Mass is bluest of blue. 2nd or 1st richest state in the US. It's basically San Francisco. The huge $50,000,000 donation from the Apple alum Dan Riccio went to the engineering dept, not one cent to football. We don't have a T. Boone Pickens.eldonabe wrote: Sat Nov 22, 2025 9:18 amJack you are answering your own question..... It's apparently weighted more towards student outcomes and financial return on investment.minutefanjsf wrote: Sat Nov 22, 2025 7:58 amThis might be for different reason than academic achievement, etc.Sheck wrote: Fri Nov 21, 2025 11:45 pm Then how come WSJ ranked Lowell as the #1 public university in Massachusetts and URI as the #1 public U in New England?

little known stevemaz fact. i earned MBA at UGA and it was awesome going to those games between the hedges. I still care way more about our sucky Minutemen than the dawgs
Re: 2026 Season
I gotta think it's hard for a state school, even a top-ranked one, to produce a lot of politicians without a Law School. Those other flagships have produced over 200-500+ JDs per year for decades.tdmass wrote: Fri Nov 21, 2025 2:28 pm I believe that the Flagship State School in Massachusetts gets less respect from the state and local government and hence the people than any state in the country! We might see a UMass Dartmouth governor before UMass Amherst for that reason.
UMass did produce a governor of Vermont. The current governor of Maine is a UMass Boston alumnus. Also, both are the first female governors of their respective states.
