It's funny that Steve is so up in arms about this when it was my thread that got moved.

The timing of this hiring decision for a newly defined SDAD position is noteworthy. A recognition after another poor outing this wk that Football needs immediate improvement and investment. Thorr signed for 5/yrs $395K as UMass Senior Deputy AD which is an approx. 30K increase over Thorr's salary as URI AD. If nothing else this newly defined SDAD role and hiring Thorr reveals a tacit recognition that Bamford needs experienced assistance in order to get the football program quickly on track for success moving forward. Which is good - it's not a 1 person Job and having Thorr focused of football should lead to immediate improvements.

Hopefully this also means that we'll soon be hearing about tangible plans to improve the fan experience and home field advantage at McGuirk - but imo clearly the focus needs to be on recruiting and winning football games.

Wonder what URI thinks of this? No hard feelings? They are a traditional and regional rival. After joining the MAC, I was hoping that we would continue to play them in BB.

Classic body language: When Thorr spoke highly of UMass joining the MAC, Ryan had his head up the entire time. Because it happened, it's real. Then when Thorr spoke about stadium renovations and Ryan's vision of it, Ryan's head then went down for a bit. Because there is no real vision of future stadium plans, the "designs" have been in works for years now, but Thorr recently finalized monies and changes to the URI stadium.. I think that's why he really needed Thorr on board, to finally fix that stadium because it's a been there, done that for Thorr. Ryan has been stuck when it comes to the stadium

Speaking of body language, and I'm no expert, but did anybody notice that he was fiddling with the mic stand and wires during the press conference? Seemed like a lot of nervous energy and uncertainty to me, like he knew that he was done but had to put on a brave face and introduce his replacement. He didn't do any of that during his last press conference, mostly hands clasped or arms folded.

I'm not sure what to make of all of this. He's taking ownership of the hire and said it was 100% his idea. If that's the case, then it's a smart move to allow himself to take all the credit if it goes well and assign all the blame if it doesn't. But on the other hand, it certainly looks like a succession plan, doesn't it?

I too was hoping we would continue to play URI and other regional schools.
As far as FB goes, wish we could join URI’s league.

Did UMass announce a reduction in Bamfords salary to offset Thorr taking over some of his duties?? Yeah.. didn't think so... gotta love UMass.. won't give a long time valued employee a 10k raise to stay because it's a boots on the ground job.. but will pay a guy 400k to do a job your AD can't do. This is why moral in the dept is so low. They won't replace hourly guys that have left or retired so the ones still there have to do more.. but they have no problem hiring administrator after administrator to insulate the AD.
