I’ll always remember how great Eldridge was against Norm Nixon when UMass played Duquesne in Springfield while the Cage was being refurbished.

Alex graduated in 1978.
I don’t recall a refurbishment of the Cage at any time in his era. UM used to play games in Springfield during intersession.
A huge game in ‘76-‘77 was a Mike Pyatt buzzer beater to beat Rutgers, a year after Rutgers went to the Final Four. Rutgers has future NBA player and coach Eddie Jordan. Perhaps that is the game you thinking about.
I think Norm Nixon played in the Cage with Duquesne in ‘74-‘75 ‘76-‘77.
Norm Nixon graduated in ‘77, so they only would played each other in three (3) seasons.

Just cofirmed throughout Sports-Reference, that Alex and Norm didn’t play at the Civic Center, sorry.

Per Mike's opponents page, we did play Duquesne at the Springfield Civic Center in Jan. 1977. Unfortunately, I cannot find a box score.

His page is right! Tru wasted a lot of his valuable time trying to prove me wrong…but was unable to do so.

Why he took that on, I don’t know.

I've found mistakes in Sports-Reference. They're not infallible. On occasion, I've informed them, and they've been really good about acknowledging and changing as needed.

Sidebar: I once applied for a job there. Kinda glad that I didn't get it as it would have almost certainly required me to take a significant pay cut. But if you do what you love...

And if y'all ever spot mistakes in my content, please do let me know. I wanna be right, at least on my facts. My arguments are often wrong 8)

I was at that game in the Springfield Civic Center. Fans rushed the court...lots of fun!

MASSACHUSETTS on all the gear. It takes a long time for people to make the connection and not get confused with Lowell, Boston or Dartmouth. I had a boss who thought Amherst College was UMASS.

UMASS should strive for a level of recognition associated with the state. No one should be confused what is being referred to when someone says Massachusetts. North Carolina-UNC. No confusion with UNC Charlotte, Wilmington, Greensboro. Texas is in Austin not El Paso, Dallas or the 5 other places. Indiana is Bloomington and not the 7 other campuses.

SUNY schools are a mess.

I love the moniker UMASS but the sports teams should be clear that they represent the flagship campus of MASSACHUSETTS.

When I drove out for orientation my first stop was Amherst College thinking it was UMass lol.... I didn't get the names mixed up, I just saw the campus buildings and assumed it was UMass.

As long as "UMass Amherst" continues to stay off any sports jersey, I'm good with either. I love the MASSACHUSETTS block lettering that we've used on basketball and football jerseys for the last ten years. I actually want all satellite U of Mass schools to relinquish the UMass name. There is only one and only has been one "UMass", the others are just part of the U of Mass system.
