2025 Season
Re: 2025 Season
WOW - this is shaping up to be a historically bad season.
Re: 2025 Season
The most glaring takeaway I’ve had from the first 2 games is just how the team is so below average athletically. The O line in particular is huge but can’t move well at all. It was like watching 5 guards at once.

And we were fed information that the S and C coach had them all jacked and running faster than ever. They also said we were healthy. Players are dropping like flies and run over and passed on the field.kdogg8173 wrote: Sun Sep 07, 2025 5:22 pm The most glaring takeaway I’ve had from the first 2 games is just how the team is so below average athletically. one nugget i heard was that they are looking for a head trainer and that UMass pays shit for trainers.minutefanjsf wrote: Sun Sep 07, 2025 7:05 pmAnd we were fed information that the S and C coach had them all jacked and running faster than ever. I debated a separate thread, but it is relevant here. As I have mentioned I use the Massey Rating service to track FBS and I decided to try to follow along each week to see changes in predictions. As you can imagine, Umass has not faired well after the first 2 weeks.
Starting the season, Umass was predicted to win 2 games and using my own non-scientific measure of "winnable" games (those where the chance to win is 35% - 49%) there were 3 more potential wins.
I also decided to track the predicted score spreads. Every spread has increased between 4 and 7 (larger margin of loss) in two weeks. The only spread that remains unchanged is at Kent, which Umass is still projected to win (now their only win or winnable game on the season) but their odds to win have dropped from 58% to 53% (Kent must really, really suck) and they are on the road.
The additional kick in the balls is or Rating in all of D1 football. Umass started all the way up at #165, they have dropped to #199 (all FBS and FCS) - 63 FCS programs are ranked higher than Umass right now.
Right now, today, there is a real good chance the Umass goes 0'fer this year including an FCS loss. WOW what a dumpster fire.

^ As it stands, UMass would be pathetic even at the FCS level. We are 4-4 against FCS opponents since Ryam Bamford came on board. That's how far we've fallen. To put the below records into percentages, our winning percentage under Bamford is .184, and .121 under coaches he's hired.eldonabe wrote: Mon Sep 08, 2025 8:22 am The additional kick in the balls is or Rating in all of D1 football. Let's update the tracker shall we?
UMass football under Ryan Bamford is now 21-93. The record of the coaches he has hired is 8-58
Bamford's hires are now *50* games under .500
The cherry on top: UMass' record against the FCS under Bamford? 4-4 (all the Ws from Don Brown)
Re: 2025 Season
Something has to give..... I fully understand that improvement takes time. Nobody except Maz expected a .500 team this year, but joining the worst FBS conference in football and dropping a donut in total wins is bad.... really bad.
Finishing 1-11 (if we can pull off Kent on the road) this year is a fail.... FAIL.
If this season is 1-11 or worse - Bamford has got to go. He is the architect of this shit-show............ money spent or no money spent. He owns this fucking mess.
Suddenly money is little to no object - so go pay a fucking AD who knows how to run a fucking athletic department. It is that or shudder football completely and stop burning money.

Bamford has to go. UMass is currently paying 2.8M in head coaching compensation to lose to Bryant. Somewhere Don Brown is laughing.

Absolutely. For any professional team, or big college team, if a GM hires 5 consecutive bad head coaches, he is gone, plain and simple. You really want to give him another chance??Jack wrote: Mon Sep 08, 2025 10:45 am Bamford has to go. UMass is currently paying 2.8M in head coaching compensation to lose to Bryant. I'm still down to chip in to get a billboard around Amherst that says FIRE RYAN in a nice bold font.

Re: 2025 Season
I have to wonder what Uconn has done to turn things around. Obviously their basketball teams have helped raise the profile of the Athletic Department and school, but football was pretty bad for years- they had a 1-11 season in 2021 and even lost to Umass!bunkerhill87 wrote: Mon Sep 08, 2025 2:50 pm Is it really the coaching and AD or the absolute inability to land players that are capable. Again why would a player come to Umass over a Midwestern or Southern school and i dont mean the power conferences. College Football in the Northeast has had no consistency in several years.
Are they spending that much more than us on football?
Went 9-4 last year and were close against Wake Forest, Duke, and Syracuse. They were beating Syracuse this weekend until late, too.
Re: 2025 Season
Bamford fired Whipple who was easily the most successful HC UMass has had since moving to FBS. 4 wins wasn’t good enough for Bamford and he is now on his 3rd HC since Whipple - none of whom were as successful as Whipple. There needs to be consequences for failure and Bamford needs to go immediately. A new AD w/demonstrated FBS success is needed.
Re: 2025 Season
A few days have passed and I am summoned the courage to jump back on to the bandwagon. From here the goal is to beat Kent, maybe Akron and then play well in one other MAC game maybe 2 and finish the season 3-9 or 4-8. I would just put Hairston in at QB and let it ride. I really wish Coach H chose an OC who went with Pro Style offense.. i cant stand that we run the same offense everyone else does.

Re: 2025 Season
Haven't posted much as I'm burned out on FBS football and all the changes (transfers/NIL). I have written for years that Bamford is a D3 level AD who runs the AD like a D3 school on steroids (except for hockey and maybe men's/women's basketball).
Too early on Coach Joe but didn't like what I was seeing on the players he was bringing in (lot of bench warmers from FBS and decent FCS players). I know that's what the program can buy but still they should have been better against Temple and of course Bryant. He won at Maine before NIL and transfers and might not be able to adjust to this new world in college football. He comes across now as a D3 head coach, not ready for the world of today's FBS/FCS football. Whip was the one and only UMass head coach that got FBS football, finding transfers that fit with his offense and running the program like a pro team (where he came from before UMass.) Of course, this didn't fit with D3 Bamford and has doomed the program ever since Whip left. Just sad days for UMass football and until Bamford is gone, I don't see much improvement.

Re: 2025 Season
It was a mistake to fire Whipple. The 4-8 seasons were both a few plays away from being bowl seasons.
