Shahid was a JUCO guy, and while I like Shahid and would love to see him stick around, get stronger, and develop, I wouldn't describe him as a "run through a brick wall" lunch pail type of guy. Rivera, who also went to JUCO for a bit, but not Shahid, and we all know that Rivera has some very clear limitations.

But hey, Frank's in charge and the worst thing he can do is be indecisive, or try to recruit like he's still in the SEC/Big12. That was McCall's downfall in my opinion. He changed his style every year and we ended up with tons of turnover and inconsistency because of it. If Frank needs a certain type of guy to develop and run his system, then I'm willing to see how it plays out.
I’d Like to think Frank has a few connections that may help ! Unfortunately as was stated , it’s not really about the coach , school or conference! It’s the $$$ so whatever he decides is the best pathway, I’m on board for now , at least !

McCall still is in the booth broadcasting 3 years later in what should be his coaching prime right now and there doesn’t appear to be much of a desire from any school to have him as a coach. Just shows he really wasn’t very good. I still think frank can right the ship and get us into being a perennial MAC contender for the next 5 years.

Frank’s not a quitter, I like that he is embracing all avenues to find his kind of player to improve this program. Now we just need to come up with the funds to keep them if they are successful.

McCall was offered and accepted an assistant coaching position on Chris Mack's staff at CofC last off-season but ultimately decided to back out. I think he cited having a young family and wanting to make the most out of that time with his kids while he has it. Having a pretty good backup plan as a solid TV guy probably helped make the decision easier

My wife signed us up for a book club meeting of all things, so I missed the Zoom call with Frank. Can someone relay if he said anything of substance?

He confirmed that he's changed his philosophy on building a team. He's been looking for shooting and passing more this year.

He was good. I enjoyed listening to him. He sounds pleased with what we have and suggests we may have a couple more to fill out the roster in the very near future. He didn't name names.

Sounds like they put a lot of thought into allocating resources. I guess everyone is right now.

My takeaways:

1. Frank claims the downfall of last season was that the team was not connected enough. I'm paraphrasing, but he seems to think the team was doing fine early on, DHS was starting to assert himself but then things were derailed when he injured his hand, Rivera got injured, and then the stomach bug hit and that was the final straw that caused the team to fall apart.

2. Frank insists that talent was not a problem with last season's team... even though he re-iterated that he told his assistants that they needed to make sure they were improving the team's shooting, passing, and personality. Those two things seem like a bit of a contradiction and rather concerning if he thinks that team had enough talent.

3. Speaking of personality, he didn't say all of this explicitly, but I got the impression he think's last season most of the players were selfish, mentally weak, and quitters.

4, He's going to have a 15 man roster, 13 guys are signed, the last 2 he thinks will be done this week. He tried to get 13 guys who could compete for playing time hoping that competition will bring the best out in the players. Last season he used more roster spots for developmental players.

5. UMass needs a general manager for hoops ASAP. Frank said he basically doesn't pursue players if they have an agent. Frank clearly doesn't like what this has become, and ok, he can be that way but it makes it all the more important that the program has a GM who can handle that sort of stuff, because agents are only going to become more prevalent and he can't escape it forever.

Coach said we could expect announcement in the "next 48 hours" so likely we'll know more by Thursday evening. He thinks the players should announce, not him

He decided to not uproot his family to chase coaching. Joined Chris Mack staff at Charleston very shortly but then stepped down. I’m sure between what he made at UMass the broadcasting and the real estate he is doing he makes enough to live a good life in Florida and gets to spend a lot more time with his kids

^Definitely need a GM. I'm not saying that specifically as it relates to Frank Martin, but it's just the future of the business and most schools will have someone in that position, so we should too.

I also think Frank often speaks in hyperbole and contradictions, and I take what he says with a grain of salt. I highly doubt that if someone has an agent he hangs up the phone and severs contact with that player. If he's pursuing a player, does his homework on him and develops a good relationship, but the player then reveals that further talks will involve his agent, does anyone think Frank would just walk away? I don't. On the other hand, if the first thing a player says is "talk to my agent", then yes, I could see Frank walking away.

I can see Frank's point up to a point as well. This new era of college basketball is going to be tough to navigate.

Frank wants kids who want to play basketball first, not mercenaries out for the highest bidder. I totally agree with that. There is nothing wrong with wanting to get paid, but those truly selfish ones will kill a roster [almost] regardless of the talent level. Earning your pay is far different than just getting pay'd - he wants earners.

13 players competing for playing time sounds like he has no clue what the talent is, Frnk hopes he can find 8 guys who can play. Don't worry though guys, our revenues are going up becasue were going to the MAC everything is will be awesome!!!!! #BOZO
