Let's not let the recency bias and success from the most recent game cloud our judgment here. This is still a team well under .500, Curry's defense and offensive efficiency are sorely lacking, no one on this roster is critical to keep. If there's anyone I would like to keep, it's Jayden, and part of the reason is because I doubt it would take a lot of NIL $ to keep him here but he makes the team better. The best values in this new landscape of paying players will probably be guys who impact winning without racking up a lot of stats. I'm thinking of GMU, none of the guys on that team commanded big money in the transfer portal, but together they make a great team.
Niles, did you see what the offense looked like when Curry was out? That's all I'm going to say about it.

^ And with several guys injured and the half the team with the flu? Curry has been very good offensively at times, but at other times he's been bad offensively and he's almost always bad defensively. I'm sorry if I don't think throwing a whole bunch of our limited funds at Curry is a great idea.

Team game. He hasn’t scored some games, yes. Offense is light years ahead when he is at the point. All the missed layups this year only happen if the get the ball in close and Curry is responsible for getting them a lot of those.

I want Jaylen Curry on my team, no doubt. And I think he'll develop at a faster pace in his last 2 years. Maturity, strength, and knowledge of the game will all improve

Oh brother...Niles, you're killing me with this. I honestly don't know what you mean by offensive efficiency. He is our best 3pt shooter at 36.9%, Rahsool is only at 31.9%, and his assist to turnover ratio is the best by a country mile at 2.89. So he shoots well, assists his teammates, and doesn't turn it over. That sounds pretty efficient to me.

I know you hate when I throw the stats at you, but these are facts. The eye test is all good and I rely on it as well, but you may want to schedule an appointment with your optometrist.

Again with the personal insults, which really don't help make your point.

I love stats, I think they're great, but I also think it's easy to come to the wrong conclusion if you don't have context with them. Shahid Muhammad as the best offensive rating on the team... I do not think he's our best offensive player.

Curry is a good 3pt shooter, although he doesn't actually take that many of them compared to other guards. For example, per 100 possessions he takes about half of the 3's that Diggins does but he takes a bit more 2's than Diggins. Curry's big issues with offensive efficiency is his 2pt%, which sits at 37%. Curry's effective FG% is near the bottom at 43.7% (11th on the team), his True Shooting % (factors in FT%) is also near the bottom at 46.7% (also 11th). He's doesn't turn the ball over much, that I will definitely give him, but he looks to shoot far more than he looks to pass/set up teammates, which is not what I want in a PG. And again, I will die on this hill, Curry is a terrible defender, which is a real problem.

Where did I insult you? By suggesting you go see an optometrist? That's a pretty weak tongue-in-cheek insult.

1. Nobody on the planet thinks Shahid is the best offensive player on the team, that's a ridiculous comparison.
2. Curry does take a lot of 3's in comparison with other guards. Obviously Rahsool takes the most, that's pretty much his entire game, but Curry has taken 111 3's, 4.3 per game. The next highest total is 39 total 3's by Nate G, Ndjigue has taken 33 and Worthy 31. He has taken more than those three players combined, so yes, he does take a lot in comparison with every guard other than Rahsool.
3. I beg you to look at the player in the context of where he plays, both the school and the league. This is mid-major basketball. We're not watching top-25 hoops here. In the context of the A10, he's 16th in 3pt percentage, 8th in assists, and 2nd in the league in assist to turnover ratio. If you're not happy with a PG that shoots well among his peers from 3 and is one of the best among his peers in assists and turnover ratio, I'm not sure what you want from your PG. If the criticism is that he sometimes misses layups and free throws, then that is a valid criticism for every single player on this team.

He could be better as a defender, sure. But I think he's fine and his offensive play making and facilitating more than make up for it (in my opinion). I think he rebounds fairly well for his size, 3.8 per game (5th on the team), and is disruptive enough to generate steals, leading the team on a per game average and 21st in conference.

I'm sorry if any of that offended you, that is not my intention.

I'm going to the final home game with a couple of friends, but I'm more than happy to offer one to him next season. It's an open invitation, and I think we'd have a good time too. We're probably around the same age and at the core are both UMass fans. We just disagree on what we see sometimes.

I seriously believe that it is a completely different experience watching the team in person rather than on TV. You see how hard they work, how crazy it is when they get that tiny sliver of space and get off a shot, how they wear their disappointment and failures, and their interactions with the crowd and each other when they succeed. I only started coming to games on a regular basis five or so years ago, and my appreciation for the level of play and how hard it is to win has grown.

Anyways, Danny Carbuccia sounds like a good pickup. I hope he continues to improve in his final HS year and gets here ready to play and contribute.

Didn't realize Nate G has taken the 3rd most 3 pointers on this team - that's surprising and also concerning. But not as concerning as, after Diggins and Curry, no player on this team has hit over 10 3 pointers this season. Our best 3-point shooter, % wise, is Curry, and our worst is, Worthy.

The only thing here that offends is your poor use of stats. You’re going to reference per game and raw #s to support how good Curry is, ignoring the fact that UMass plays at the 2nd fastest pace in the conference just barely behind URI, which is going to inflate those numbers compared to players in the league.

Compared to most guards, not the ones on UMass, Curry’s ratio of 3pt to 2pt FG skews towards 2pt FGs, which he is not efficient at, this is one of the reasons that despite shooting a very respectable % from 3, his overall efficiency numbers are not good. For a PG playing on an uptempo team with a high usage, his assist numbers are rather low, which tracks with what I see from his games.

I guess we’ll just have to agree to disagree about his defense. He gets a decent number of steals, but overall he’s a major liability.

Niles, you said I personally insulted you. Feel free to take this to a private message as I don't want to clutter up the Carbuccia thread with it. If you're going to accuse me of insulting you, stick by it and tell me what the insult is. I don't believe that I said anything insulting or offensive, and I'd rather not be accused of that, only to have you run and hide behind some "offensive use of stats".

*Edited to take a lot of stuff out. No point in furthering the argument. We just disagree. This is yet another reason why you should come to a game with me. When Curry goes on a 10-0 run all by himself and the place is rocking, you can teach me about advanced efficiency analytics.

Great tune. I remember getting high to that song in my dorm room (vanmeter) in 72/73. I guess I’m a little off topic here
