I'm scaling down my maroon just a bit if we don't have Cross and Gapare. However, if DD can come close to what he's done against AIC and CCSU, it helps offset the loss of Cross. Surprised that Chase Paar (transfer from GW, 6'10, 260) didn't play. He's not a superstar but is their only player who can match up with Wildens.

They have a guy, Thompson (6'7, 245) who averaged 10.8 and 6.7 last year with 1.6 blocks per game. An interesting matchup with Kante.

Hopefully Cross is back. Gaspare is going to take some time. Luckily we have the depth to give him that time. We have to play a good game but we are still good enough and deep enough to beat them. If we are sloppy and soft we will lose.

ESPN has us favored by 4.6 with a 67% chance of winning. That's more respect than we got from them in almost any game last year.

Frank is putting us back on the map. It's been a while.

We will see about that. I am hopeful for that as well.

^ Still a lot of work to be done for sure, but I agree that Martin is putting UMass back on the map. At this point it’s curiosity.

There’s no doubt in my mind that this team has potential. Whether they stay on the map is dependent on whether they come together and get some wins.

^ Likewise, Floyd! Between men’s and women’s hoops, hockey and swimming, I’ll be on campus a lot over the next several months. Hope we connect again.

UMass injury update: Tafara Gapare didn’t practice with a thumb. Matt cross did practice and could be available depending on how the injury responds
If Cross isn't close to 100% I say sit him and have him ready for the South Carolina Event. We have a shot to beat Towson with Monday's players.

Coach Martin talked (link below) about the challenge of beating a team who knows how to win. Says he likes this year's UMass depth, implying they might be able to wear down Towson a bit. I watched some of the St.Joe-Towson exhibition, and Towson was bothered some by the press. Seems like the team might still need to learn the basics of coach's defense, but can/should they also press some?

In Towson's narrow win over Albany I think they played 7 guys at the most and only like 5 scored. I also think the biggest guy was 6'7. Obviously we need to play well but if we lean on them they will run out of gas by the second half. At home, and seeing how we played the last two games, a loss would be a slight disappointment. So goes the life a UMass fan.

FYI - LIU lost at Towson last year 72-63 but Kante went for 17 and 6 against them.
