Just an opinion, but I see this as tremendous news.UMassfan_19 wrote: ↑Wed Aug 17, 2022 11:05 am Official with a fun little video https://twitter.com/umassmbb/status/155 ... j56X4qjX8Q
Make UMass Basketball Great Again
Re: Return of Derek Kellogg?
I'm still like a kid at Christmas time. There is never enough! May The Force be with us now that we have a full staff. One more player to go and 3 more games to announce. Can't wait for the season to start.

Re: Return of Derek Kellogg?
It seems like the reaction on Twitter so far has been positive. If he's mended fences with Bamford and knows his role, this could work out really well. In my opinion, what he adds is a good recruiting track record, a passion for UMass, and he's a player's coach. There are downsides as well, but if he's fully invested, I think it could be a really nice hire. Either way, it's an assistant spot and I'm not getting too fired up about it either way.

So much for all those NCAA sanctions coming our way

I have to say I was not thrilled when the rumor first surfaced, but I teared up a little watching that video. Welcome home Derek. Another guy who just wants UMass hoops to win.

Re: Return of Derek Kellogg?
Well now that we have such an elite recruiter in DK, maybe we can fill those remaining roster spots with 5 star players from Mass...

This line is becoming a standard part of all hires….. pending the completion of a background check.
Why don’t they do the background check before they hire……someone trying to show they do their research on candidates…….wonder what other national players in the academic world make that part of their standard releases ?

Re: Return of Derek Kellogg?
Remember DK is what ~2 years from collecting a state pension with 10 years service? Move makes a lot of sense for him. I expect him to stay for a couple years then move on. His kid is in HS by now too, no?
I like the move fwiw. Unorthodox? Yes. But DK knows the university, knows the region and knows the levers of power. He will be an asset to Martin as he transitions and DK doesn’t seem like the egotistical type to try to make it his own program, I mean, he practically handed the reigns over to Vance Wahlberg when he was head coach so there’s no worries there at all.

Re: Return of Derek Kellogg?
My biggest concern with all of this is that I have to imagine DK wants a head coaching job and because he was fired in July, they were all taken. If he is put on the recruiting trail, which I expect his to be, and he takes a head coaching job next year then its possible some of those recruits follow him. I would be very cautious for sure.
Re: Return of Derek Kellogg?
I've voiced by concerns but it's clear that everyone involved is on board with the decision to bring DK back.
So with that said, congrats to DK and congrats to UMass! Let's get back to the Dance!

Re: Return of Derek Kellogg?
I personally only see this as a positive move for the program. DK can recruit and has enough coaching experience under his belt where he can come in right away and contribute. Plus, you can't argue against his passion for UMass and Amherst.

I'd only be uncomfortable in so far as I feel bad that you carry around such resentment, and "messageboarding" DK is, apparently, one of your outlets. It's sad.JoleonLescottsHair wrote: ↑Tue Aug 16, 2022 9:53 pmSo you find it uncomfortable that I stated his actual coaching record? I think we can all see who once got stuffed into a locker.DanaDingle3 wrote: ↑Mon Aug 15, 2022 8:19 amIt sucks that Derek stuffed you into a locker freshman year, but you gotta get over it. Hopefully Frank and UMass hire him, and if and when they do, we'll have seen about the biggest turnaround in coaching staffs in college basketball history.JoleonLescottsHair wrote: ↑Sun Aug 14, 2022 8:44 pm
Maybe, but he wasn’t exactly setting the world on fire. 74-74 in 5 seasons. The guy they fired to get to DK was coming off a 20 win season, something DK failed to achieve in his 5 seasons.
I'm happy he's back, and I'm loving the direction of the program. I'm not going to address any further DK "messageboarding."

Re: Return of Derek Kellogg?
He was very underwhelming as a HC here, but I think the speculation of him being anything but a good hire as an assistant is heavily weighted by the stink of his last few seasons here. No way in hell is there going to be any sort of power struggle between him and FM. It's Frank's ship and I don't think DK would ever get in the way of that if he's smart. I think it boils down to him still wanting to be a part of Umass' rise again. This gives him that opportunity. And for as sour as things were when he left here, I think his shocking departure from LIU probably overshadows any of that now.
