Games 17 & 18, 2021-22: Saint Louis (1/20 & 23)

Post by MikeUMA » Mon Dec 20, 2021 5:49 pm

SLU just cancelled their 12/22 (vs Drake in Las Vegas). SLU beat writer @studurando reports "SLU had at least one player test positive for COVID this morning."

SLU is supposed to be our A-10 opener on 12/30. That seems a little iffy now.

Last season, SLU had to cancel their visit to Amherst, again due to their COVID pause.

SLU is tough but I don't want to see a home game against them cancelled. If it was at SLU I might feel differently.

A little clarity from the SLU writer that the program is not on full pause.

First off, I have my fingers crossed that this game actually gets played. I think it's inevitable that there will be an increase in cancellations after the holiday break. How many players and staff members from either team are actually going to follow ALL protocols while they're away? It only takes one.

Second, I hope that when the players get back on campus, the coaching staff works them out hard to get back into shape and prepare for this game. Some guys will be out of game shape from not playing or practicing after the flu went around. Others will no doubt be fat and happy after spending time home eating Christmas cookies, which I'm not condemning. I'll certainly do that, and they should too. The rubber hits the road next Thursday, we'll see if they're ready.

Does anyone know if there are any plans to play this game without fans in attendance? I know Fordham and GW have taken this approach already. I'm hoping we don't, of course. Just wondering before I travel up for it.

Hey Marty...feel like you haven't posted in a while. Hope you're doing well.

I suggest calling before you leave. Seems like these decisions are made/changed without much notice.

I just saw that the St Louis game has been postponed per CBS' Matt Norlander. He didn't say which program, or maybe both, has Covid issues and is the reason for the postponement. The key is that it's postponed, not cancelled.

^ no kidding. This is why I was hoping like crazy for a replacement team when NJIT got cancelled. Not to overwork these kids before the break and cram a game in, but because we all knew more cancellations were coming. I wonder if this is a UMass Covid issue, SLU, or both.

Hard to tell until confirmed. Women got postponed too, as has their next game on 1/1 vs Mason.

Reports are saying it is on the SLU end, NOT UMass (per Howard Herman and Michael Bergman).

It is 100% on SLU. Here's the revised A10 Covid policy. If I read it right, SLU does not have 7 available players. Take a look and see if you read it the same way.

Under the revised A-10 COVID policy, games that cannot be played due to positive COVID-19 tests will be postponed and attempted to be rescheduled by the Atlantic 10 Conference office. If a suitable reschedule date cannot be found, the game will be declared a no contest. Conference standings and championship seeding will be based on an approved formula balancing team win-loss records with total number of contests completed. If a team opts to not play the rescheduled contest, the game can be declared a forfeit by the league office. In addition, the conference also revised an earlier policy for requiring teams to complete conference games. The revision requires teams that have seven available scholarship student-athletes and one countable coach to compete in all conference contests. Teams may also participate with less than seven available student-athletes. If a team elects not to play, despite having seven scholarship student-athletes and one coach available, that team will incur a forfeit and be given a loss in the league standings, and the opposing team will be granted a forfeit win.

I mean, if Howard and Michael were saying it, I trusted that information to be accurate.
