Confidence in McCall

Post by PreecherJenkins » Tue Nov 23, 2021 1:03 pm

As the resident McCall hater, it is time for another poll to see where we stand on confidence.

What is our confidence level in McCall:

0- No confidence he can turn this ship around on the season.

5- Lukewarm on believing in McCall, but need to see a larger sample of this season

10- This is the right guy to bring this program back to relevance and beyond!

Also want to wish everyone on the board a happy thanksgiving. Thankful we have a group of people who can share thoughts on UMass, thanks to Mike for keeping the board going.

Call me a 3. It's November 23 and I'm not jumping ship, but after losing 2 and getting taken to OT in the other Jersey Mike's game, against that field, I have little reason to think we're going to figure it out against generally tough competition.

0. He's just not a good coach.

Unfortunately no real excitement surrounding the program.
I would give him a 2 max. They need a coach with some proven success as a head coach!

I wish this poll had more options, I’m also about a 2 or 3.

He's gotten himself to the point that even if we go 2-0 this week he probably doesn't rise above 5. 1-1 this week is still a 5. 0-2 puts a lock on 0.

Unfortunately, mediocrity has been gradually more accepted with this program since the good old days. Each year seems to get worse. Not too long ago I remember beating Kansas and Louisville on the road, winning twice in the same season at Syracuse and some other great wins to include Memphis. Keep in mind, this is all post Cal and Bruiser. Could you imagine Matt McCall taking a team to Louisville and winning? Absolutely no chance. We have become a punchline and an embarrassment. Not even mad anymore, just disappointed. I think Matt is a good guy. But it’s clear he can’t steal a win for you.

0.000 He came in as an inexperienced head coach and proceeded to stick to only what he knew which was a spread pick and roll offense with live and die by the 3 mentality. He should have learned about the value and execution of a tight D, the value of positioning and teaching angles in rebounding and convincing his guys that playing harder than the opponent will win games and anything less is totally unacceptable. He tried to look good, never upgraded his own coaching game, and he didn’t engage the community. Most of all he didn’t listen to all of my free, unsolicited advice!! He’s getting exactly what he deserves. I’m sure he’s a nice guy but I’ll be dancing when he’s gone as our coach.

He is no better than DK, IMHO.

Don't get mad. Just my opinion.

^ I know I'm going to be sorry for bringing this up, but with a good coach how far would this team go? We were 10-6 in conference. For me, the most underperforming team I can recall. Probably no better than 10-6 under the current regime and 13-3 under Ford.

I watched a few minutes of Wisconsin last night and noticed they actually send cutters to the basket on offense. It seems like all we do on O is rotate around the 3 point line. The few times I've seen people cutting to the hoop it often leads to an easy basket.

I voted with a 5 (would've gone with 4 if it was an option) because I think McCall is a mediocre coach, but in his 5th season I'm ready to pull the plug.

Just hoping that Don Brown's hire doesn't take the heat off Bamford to address Men's Bball. Been watching rebuilds in this program for far to long!!
