Atlantic 10 Expansion

Post by wmmmfan » Sat Oct 02, 2021 12:26 am

With the news today that Air Force, Colorado State, Boise St and San Diego St turned down the AAC, I hope the A10 is trying to recruit Temple and Wichita State to join.

^ Agreed. I also hope UMass would turn down an AAC offer as well, but I do fear that they wouldn't. The floundering of both UConn and Temple basketball in the AAC (even with the strong schools that are leaving for the B12) should be a clear warning to UMass that the AAC is not a good place for a Northeast basketball program.

I’d love to get Temple back. They can’t be happy with the state of AAC basketball and this is one of the reasons I still don’t mind being independent in football. A-10 basketball is still awesome. Navy, Memphis and ECU should all be targets too.

I agree, the AAC is dead as a conference and it would be a colossal mistake to take an invite from them with the mishmosh that is left. The A10 is our home and being an Independent in football is the outcome of mismanagement since Don Brown left. It’s time for the A10, and UMass for that matter, to strengthen its position in basketball and build the brand.

I'd hope Temple could be convinced to rejoin the A10. I'm a little skeptical that even with the increased competition that the A10 would garner more bids for its 15 or 16 members. But higher quality is higher quality.

According to Ken Pomeroy the AAC ex-Cincy, Houston, UCF is still at least on par with the A10.

No way Temple is going to nuke their football program to go back to the A10. The AAC might not be ideal but Temple really doesn't have a better option. And yes UMass should absolutely accept an invite into that league and if Temple were smart they'd be pushing for us and Buffalo to get invites. Then that league looks quite a bit better.

This obscures the fact that the AAC has no quality depth. The A10 had 6 top 100 Kenpom teams this past season, but of their go-forward teams, the AAC had 3. The bottom of the A10 is shit, so that drags down the A10 averages, but it's a lot more important to have quality at the top.

Big East might be looking to expand, which would probably means the A10 gets gutted if it happens.

UMass in a true 1-bid A10 is worse than being an in a 1-bid any other league + football. UMass better be working on something here...

Under the present environment this is the best scenario I can come up with for saving the AAC. SMU AND Tulsa could go Conference USA or Mountain West. The next best all sports option would be the MAC with Temple.

SLU is hosting the public on Tuesday for a "major announcement regarding the future of Billiken Athletics".

Possibly related to the expansion talk by the Big East commissioner earlier this week?

If so it will be yet another school that has recently joined the A-10 and left UMass behind. Conference seems to be a stepping stone for just about everyone else. Time to seriously reconsider the long term plan and conference affiliation.
UMass Football: 22-3 at home when I was a student.

Leave the A-10!

What's the difference if basketball is 7th every year in the A10 vs 7th in the AAC? Yes the top of the A10 is better than the top of the AAC but how many times in the last oh say 20 years have we been in the top 3 or 4 of the A10?? I did read that there may have been some talk about a AAC/CUSA realignment. AAC takes all the eastern teams and CUSA the west. If that happens and the AAC wants us... go

^ The conference record hasn't been pretty recently. https://umasshoops.com/wiki/doku.php?id=season_history
Our best finish so far under McCall was 5th place in last year's shortened season, and Kellogg had a couple of 6th place finishes. Travis Ford was really the only coach that has had good conference success with a tie for 1st and a 3rd.
