As a practical matter think staying with A10 and FB only would be the best choice and don't hate me, but still like the MAC over a weaken CUSA. The only shot at the MAC is if we agree to play for free or very few dollars the first 3 years. Say 24-27 until the MAC new media contract. The MAC would have an unbalanced schedule, which they do not like, so can't ask for much money until we know if we have x value in the new contract cycle. We'd gain a more sane schedule with 6 home games most years, access to the conference championship and defined bowl access. Also the travel budget for football was 100k less while in the MAC. The MAC gains a slightly expanded footprint, which is of unknown value until their new media contract. Even if it's not much, like the idea of being in a conference over getting beat up in multiple P5 games and stuck with some years of just 5 home games.

Thought the money for just the CFP is interesting as the CUSA and MAC received 16.9Million for 14 teams and the MAC 15.4Million for 12 teams. UMass received 0.3Million. CUSA media deal believe is less than the A10 and the MAC is double at 10Million.

Noting UMass without a conference still earns more than the entire CAA conference.
Below is a summary of the College Football Playoff payouts made for 2019-20:

American Athletic Conference $27,588,613.84
Atlantic Coast Conference $78,044,814.81
Big Ten Conference $79,513,176.82
Big 12 Conference $78,306,336.64
Conference USA $16,932,474.35
Mid-American Conference $15,380,427.86
Mountain West Conference $20,036,567.35
Pac-12 Conference $70,473,030.64
Southeastern Conference $76,513,176.81
Sun Belt Conference $18,484,520.85
Big Sky Conference $273,746.90
Big South Conference $273,746.90
Colonial Conference $273,746.90
Mid-Eastern Conference $273,746.90
Missouri Valley Conference $273,746.90
Ohio Valley Conference $273,746.90
Southern Conference $273,746.90
Southland Conference $273,746.90
SWAC $273,746.90
Patriot League $273,746.90
Brigham Young University $311,926.51
University of Massachusetts $311,926.51
Notre Dame University $3,281,628.46
U.S. Military Academy $311,926.51
Liberty University $311,926.52
New Mexico State University $311,926.52

Total College Football Playoff payouts: $488,851,870.00

These totals do not include payouts made by bowls directly to conferences under separate contracts. Additionally, each conferences handles distributions to member institutions differently.

Things get even more interesting, the MWC is staying together. The AAC does not have good options now. It's either CUSA sloppy seconds or the Sun Belt and those schools are pretty close together.

Here are some possible scenerios:

1) Memphis goes Big 12 because it's not done expanding.
2) Navy goes indy, they don't need the AAC

It's ironic that 2 months ago the obit was being written for the Big 12. Now it looks like the AAC may be the one on the way out.

UMass’ best bet at this point, and it’s a long shot, but would probably be to convince UConn to team up with them. Have UConn use whatever pull they have to get UMass in the Big East for basketball and nonrevenue sports and then have both schools enter a packaged deal to be football only members of whatever conference will take them agreeing to play 4OOC games in both Men’s and Women’s basketball against the schools of whichever conference is willing to take them football only.

UConn gets a football conference out of the deal while getting to stay Big East. UMass gets a football conference and to be in great basketball conference which I think would make everyone here happy. The football conference would get 8 OOC games against Big East Teams a year in both Men’s and Women’s basketball which hopefully make them happy. Getting the UConn women to play at your place would be significant I’d think.

UMass obviously gains the most in the above situation while contributing the least which is why it’s a long shot, but I can’t think of any other ways conference realignment works in the school’s favor.
UMass Football: 22-3 at home when I was a student.

^ I think teaming up with UConn in any capacity is a good idea. A Big East invite is unlikely to fruit from that partnership. But props to any AD/Chancellor/President who could pull that off.

The UMass to Big East is the best scenario for us. I do not think it is a long shot as UMass has gained dramatically in the academic rankings the past decade. The second best scenario is a formation of a new conference as I proposed before assuming the AAC loses more members to the Big 12

UMass, Temple, East Carolina, Coastal Carolina, Liberty... maybe Buffalo, Toledo, and Marshall.. add UConn, Navy, and Army for FB only and then VCU, Dayton, and URI for all other sports... We need to get out of the A10.

No conference is going to touch Liberty-way to toxic of a culture for University presidents to agree to associate with.

Liberty is in a conference for all other sports. ASun. Asun will sponsor FCS next year.

i've listened to you ramble for that we were going to big 10? What changed.

spoiler alert, UMass best option is a return to (of) MAC...

The administration blew it by not pumping more money into Football (coaches salaries especially) 10 years ago. If Umass had done what Liberty or Coastal Carolina have done, it would have become pretty obvious choice for Big Ten if they decided to go to 16 to add one of the best Public Universities in the country. Just take a look at the list of top 50 State U's

That bird has flown the coop so now we need to put all of our efforts into getting into the Big East.. Big East will expand and as I just wrote on Hoop forum, UMass should be #1 choice, then Dayton and Saint Louis to make 14. They could split into two divisions (a format I prefer) East: UMass, Uconn, Prov, SH, SJ, V, and GTown and West: Marq, X, Dep, Cre, St L, Dayton and Butler.

The reason why we need to get into Big East is that the Power 5 conferences are going to break free from NCAA and they will take the Big East with them for all other sports. Only other Conference's that may be taken are Mountain West and maybe a conglomeration of what remains in a new AAC.

UMass did pump more many into football ten years ago with the performance center/press box and salaries so it would be equivalent with the conference it joined--the MAC! Yes it was donations but that's how football funding works--large donations. The school can't "pump" money that it doesn't have. If UMass was still in the MAC, it would not be the national embarrassment it is today.

The UMass head coach made more then the CCU head coach for many years:

UConn has a huge ego and like scheduling many P5 games, so think it's problematic to have them partner with us, unless their administration feels differently. That said and having the history of the CAA expanding to the south and then consolidating more to the mid-Atlantic think CUSA at some point would do the same. So while not opposed to CUSA feel it is risky with a FB only that could be ended at any point the contract expires. Still favor the MAC. Came up with this idea and not sure what you think.

The MAC gives UConn bowl access and UConn agrees to 5 games with the MAC including one with us, plus 2 BB games. The MAC takes UMass as a FB only for peanuts for 6 bb games with 4 in the east and 2 west. The MAC gets a rivalry game and we get access to the MAC Championship, bowl access, define schedule and hopefully improving recruits. Six games out of 13 OOC games is a lot, but we still have a tournament or two and a handful of games. The others are pot luck and don't mind them being replaced with MAC east teams.
Go UMass!!

Word on the street is the AAC is looking to raid CUSA. Rumored schools include Charlotte, FAU, North Texas, UTSA, Rice and UAB. This will probably result in the collapse of CUSA. The question becomes, what happens next? Is Memphis and Temple going to stay in this watered down league with sloppy seconds? Does Navy go back to indy? Could this lead to the early stages of a football only conference or scheduling coalition? This could be an opportunity for UMass.
