Who would you hire as HC for 2021-22
Re: Who would you hire as HC for 2021-22
ESPN today ranked the 68 coaches in this year's NCAAs according by how they did as players (link below). Several successful coaches have resumes like MM's; e.g., Will Wade (LSU, after success at VCU), Scott Drew (Baylor), Chris Beard (Texas Tech); were managers at college teams, and those first 2 didn't even play high school. So it can be done, although there's also coaches like Patrick Ewing and Juwan Howard. It's a lot more common for successful coaches to NOT have been college stars, let alone pros, although most played. About a dozen of the 68 didn't play in college and another dozen barely played or were at places like NAIA schools.
Of course, these stat mean zip when trying to get the 1 coach who could succeed in Amherst.
In the middle of the rankings, #30 of the 68, is Rick Pitino. His blurb says he played with "future NBA player (and eventual Rhode Island, Boston College and Kennesaw State coach) Al Skinner." Would have thought playing with Julius Erving would be a bigger highlight, but guess not from a coaching perspective.

He didn't play with Julius. He was just after the good Doc left. Same with Al. I believe Al was on the Freshman team when Doc was a Jr.bobolink wrote: ↑Tue Mar 16, 2021 12:40 pm ESPN today ranked the 68 coaches in this year's NCAAs according by how they did as players (link below). ^ Correct about both, Rick and Al.

^Correction...Al and Rick were in the same class. If Julius had stayed for his senior year, the three of them would have played together for the 71-72 season. Tom McLaughlin was a junior on that team. But the ABA came calling so it was not to be.

On a recent Zoom call with all the former players I told Julius that he should have stayed because we could have been a top 10 team and who would have been able to stop Julius and Al Skinner. Would have put UMass on the national stage. That Freshman team with Skinner Pitino Trow Burke and Endicott also had another Point Guard Mike Flanagan. Mike as a Soph concentrated on his baseball career and went on to win the Cy Young and the World Series for Baltimore.
As I always said UMass has a great basketball history and some great people have worn the UMass jersey with pride. What is going on now with player’s transferring and abandoning the program is deeply disturbing. Amherst is a special place and has great people so if players don’t appreciate it then so be it but if it’s good enough for Julius Erving Al Skinner Rick Pitino Mike Flanagan Marcus Camby Lou Roe Harper Williams Mike McCoy John Calipari Jack Leaman and so many more we should all be proud of UMass and somehow we will get thru this and we will find young men who will be proud to wear a UMass jersey with PRIDE. We are a great University with great people and don’t ever sell UMass short.

The real question (since MM will NOT be fired this year) is what should we be looking for in an assistant coach? We need someone who can recruit the prep schools in New England and hopefully has connections in the NY/NJ area. From a teaching perspective, we need a big man coach. Both of our current assistants were guards.
OR, do you think we can get the Brewster Academy coach and have him bring his 5 best players?

Re: Who would you hire as HC for 2021-22
If MM wants to go with experience he could look to someone like Will Brown, recently released by UAlbany but a successful track record. If he wants to go with young up and comer, maybe Alex Popp formerly at VT Academy.69MG wrote: ↑Sun Mar 21, 2021 9:55 am The real question (since MM will NOT be fired this year) is what should we be looking for in an assistant coach? Why is everyone so anxious to get a new coach so we can bitch about that person and scream "fire him" every time he loses? We already have that.
Re: Who would you hire as HC for 2021-22
Someone that can show they are a repeatable winner, so being a head coach for at least 8-9 years being in the post season most years. Someone that can recruit and get that great point guard as Preston from Ohio. Jeff Boals, who also went back to his his home university. So it can be an alum but that is not the critical piece and should not be a negative either. A proven winner!

This is a 8 minute highlight and they were tough the whole game, playing with confidence. That's what I want.1995 graduate of Ohio. He served as a two-time team captain and garnered four varsity letters under the leadership of his head coach, the late Larry Hunter. During his junior season in 1993-94, the Bobcats went 25-8 overall and won the Mid-American Conference regular season championship with a 14-4 mark in league play. The Bobcats capped off a MAC Tournament run with an 89-66 win over archrival Miami in the title game to send Ohio to the NCAA Tournament for the first time in nine years. The Bobcats began Boals’ senior season by winning the 1994 Preseason National Invitation Tournament with victories over Ohio State, No. 14 Virginia, George Washington and New Mexico at Madison Square Garden.
A member of Thad Matta's coaching staff from 2009-16, Boals helped guide Ohio State to seven postseason appearances, including six NCAA Tournaments. The Buckeyes, who won or claimed a share of three Big Ten Conference titles, advanced to the Final Four in 2012. Ohio State went 193-62 during Boals' time in Columbus.
Boals was instrumental in bringing some of the top players in the nation to Ohio State, including current NBA stars Jared Sullinger and D’Angelo Russell, along with Aaron Craft, the all-time steals and assist leader in Ohio State history. He also coached the 2010 National Player of the Year, Evan Turner, during his outstanding collegiate career with the Buckeyes.
Prior to Ohio State, Boals spent three seasons at Akron, serving as the team's recruiting coordinator and working with the post players. The Zips advanced to three MAC Tournament championship games, winning the title in 2009 as Akron earned its first NCAA Tournament berth since 1986. Boals also recruited Anthony "Humpty" Hitchens, a MAC All-Freshman Team performer, and Zeke Marshall, a top-35 national recruit.
Boals spent two seasons (2004-06) at Robert Morris and four years (1999-2003) at Marshall. In his final season at Robert Morris, the Colonials posted their first winning record in 15 seasons. He also spent a total of four seasons at Division II University of Charleston in two different stints.

Skinner, Pitino and Trow were a year ahead of Endicott, Murphy, Burke and Flanagan
