ughh ... and just as I posted that, the Collegian has a story on more potential transfers: https://dailycollegian.com/2021/03/sour ... er-portal/

"Ronnie DeGray III, Javohn Garcia, Cairo McCrory, Dyondre Dominguez and Kolton Mitchell were named as players that have a chance of joining T. Mitchell in the transfer portal.

Sources tell the Collegian that “one or two” of those five aforementioned names could still make the decision to stay at UMass."

Mitchell's a huge loss, no doubt. He seems like a good kid and I wish him well. I just hope that he's being guided with his best interest at heart and not being used as a bargaining chip. In my admitted biased view it seems like a big risk to leave a team in which you're the number one option for an uncertain future.

Well the Woodstock gamble has blown up in spectacular fashion. We all knew this was a possibility but it still sucks.

TJ and Noah are solid players and I think they could end up with great careers if they decide to stick in Amherst. I’d love for Cairo to stay, but I’ve come to terms that the rest are likely gone.

Where does McCall turn from here? He should add 2-3 more freshmen and round out the roster with transfers. He’ll be coaching for his job next season. I think Bamford is just as much to blame as McCall.

I’m with a lot of the other posters, let’s find some kids who want to play for UMass and take our chances with them. Now we just need a coach who wants to be here and can build a program. We’ll have to get wait a year or two to find out who that guy might be.

McCall’s job was saved by bringing in Mitchell and Bergeron. Keep that in perspective as you’re throwing stones. He had two years with him and look at the results.

I do like the long term prospect of Bergeron being a head coach at the D1 level considering he’s won over 400 games as a prep coach. That’s not an accident. Players believe in him. He’s a head coach by nature and I don’t see his future being an assistant. Those statements have absolutely nothing to do with him being the head coach at UMass, just my observations of him and his future.

UMass Exodus: McCall should resign. If you consistently can’t keep a team of your recruits together, the blame is on you as the coach and leader. Same in a corporate environment.

Losing JG, Cairo and RDIII would be such a massive blow. And then would Preston want to come back to this mess? As far as Tre goes, whatever. Like I said this solidified the fact that he wouldn't be here more than 3 years any way. So losing out on next year sucks. And as far as TB goes, I'm starting to come over to the side that he's a snake, which means he'll fit right in as a college basketball head coach somewhere sometime. Don't want it to be here. I agree with those saying firing McCall and hiring TB to keep Tre for 1 more year is ridiculous. Time to bring in the 3-star kids who will develop over their 4 years here and want to play for the University.

I don't know how comfortable I'd be as a new HC if I thought my new assistant would be going after my job. Tre's gone after next year wherever he goes so it would seem this was the year for TB to get a HC jump if any year.

Now I see why Cal keeps his same crew, loyalty.

Per that article, only 3 possible players will return. To me, this screams an opportunity to start fresh with a new coach. Especially with all the excellent candidates that are out now. Guys lets be real, we can do much better than McCall. And PLEASE do not hire a bullshit recruiting firm for a coach that will cost 6 figures.

I wonder if everyone’s source on all of this has the initials TB...

Maybe, and I mean Maybe the guys on the team (including some of the Woodstock guys) read between the lines and always knew that Tre was out to get his, and this doesn't really change much? I don't know. I know this is wishful thinking. But Fernandes' dad tweeted that out, DD's father liked it and so did TJ. Also - Gasperini liked it. So he didn't lose the whole locker room. Maybe some will see Tre leaving as an opportunity for more minutes and a bigger role, and were not happy with the McCall/TB/Tre power struggle and will want to start fresh. This is admittedly very glass half full.

I hear there is a promising young coach down at Winthrop, maybe we can snatch him up.
What is that Lappas guy up to these days? Maybe he would bring in an assistant who has a hockey star.

Or maybe McCall and Bell switch jobs, can't be less successful.

Just stirring up here, sorry.

MM didn’t lose the players...Tre’s relationship with him is fine...not the reason for any of this
