Liberty University
UMASS should not have anything to do with this school.

Re: Liberty University
Already had a thread created about the Liberty problem and Mike merged it into the COVID-19 thread.
Stop waiting for UMass to do something big and help UMass do something big. - Shades
Re: Liberty University
This is not just a post about COVID 19. It is a way to inform the board on how Liberty U works and why UMASS should not engage them in athletics. More on that later.

A Great University

“He doesn’t think anyone should be able to tell him what to do, and he’s going to do whatever he wants,” a former Liberty University executive told me.
“He’s very defiant,” said another longtime Falwell associate with close ties to the Falwell family. “It’s very much in his character. That’s a family trait. His father was the same way.”
instructors must conduct their online classes from their campus offices, and that they are still expected to hold office hours and welcome students for face-to-face interaction.

Falwell appeared on "Fox & Friends" to suggest that the coronavirus was a plot designed to hurt Trump and floated the notion that it might actually be a Chinese or North Korean bioweapon attack. Video in article.

I hesitate to even call Liberty University a morally bankrupt institution because that would it imply it has lost something which it once possessed. Instead, it is an insidious vanity project masquerading as a school, and it is going to get people killed
Trip Gabriel @tripgabriel 2h
Nearly a dozen Liberty students were sick with symptoms that suggest Covid-19 after Falwell called them back to campus. “Liberty will be notifying the community as deemed appropriate and required by law,” Falwell said when confronted with the numbers.

Re: Liberty University
Wow, this guy is really sticking it to the liberals! He really showed them!
The sad part is the majority of these students agree with the decision and their parents sent them right off, no issues.

Re: Liberty University
Yikes, utter buffoonery. Wonder if the parents had to sign off on some liability statement before sending their kids back.
Re: Liberty University
So Falwell is now going after journalist who report bad things- sound familiar. An autocrat who wants to bully and intimidate the press because they publish truthful but unflattering stories. Yet another reason Bamford should stop scheduling Liberty University. It is not an educational institution but rather a front for Falwell.

Re: Liberty University
There was a student from Liberty on the Jeopardy college tournament yesterday. She seemed like a nice person but she came in last out of the 3 contestants. It's totally irrational but I was rooting against her (actually her school). The kid from Indiana was really smart.
Re: Liberty University
Equally irrationally, I found myself immediately rooting against her sweatshirt. Generally I reserve that attitude for athletics considerations. Sadly, this is the new normal in our reality show country. Are ya fer us, or are ya agin us?
Re: Liberty University
"Liberty" university. Oh, the irony.
Re: Liberty University
Such a nice school-all about education.
Liberty University is, in a very real sense, profiting from the COVID-19 pandemic — keeping its campus and campus services 'open' as a pretext to retain Plaintiff's and the other Class members’ room, board and campus fees, despite no longer having to incur the full cost of providing those services, all the while putting students’ finances and health at risk," according to the lawsuit filed Monday by "Student A."
"We filed this lawsuit because we believe that Liberty's effort to profit from the COVID-19 pandemic is wrong. It's particularly hypocritical in light of the values upon which the university says that it's based,” Levitt said.

Re: Liberty University
Here is what the leader of LU is concerned about and what Chancellor Subbaswami is concerned about. Quite a contrast. IMO, UMASS should not have anything to do with LU athletically. Our association with LU through the athletic competitions gives Falwell an undeserved aura of legitimacy.

Re: Liberty University
The answer at the moment seems to be that because of our independent status in football, we are not in a position to make the break. I have emailed Ryan in the past with no response. My vote is that football right now comes in a bad second to what goes on at Liberty and I advocate for making a clean break right now.
