KAEO: Tre Mitchell

Post by Slapthefloor93 » Wed Mar 13, 2019 12:39 am

Figured I’d start up a thread for Tre since our courtship seems to be getting more and more serious, what with us making his final 6 today.

I don’t love how stiff the competition is, but it seems like I’ve been seeing some really encouraging stuff lately. I know it’s been noted that 247 has us landing him (71% chance, and all the non-us picks are from half a year ago), but I was browsing the Friar hoops forum and someone quoted Corey Evans from Rivals saying “If I were a betting man I’d say UMass.”

Don’t want to jinx anything or get my hopes too high, but man, that would be incredible.

I don't know if it helps or not, but Santos and Buggs have both tweeted for Tre to come to UMass, as well as a number of "us". What a future front court if Tre and Thomas both turn out to be as good as advertised.

When are we expecting an announcement? Seems odd to even do since apparently this is already a done deal according to some...

Here is the NLI schedule:
Division I Basketball (Regular Period) April 17, 2019 - May 15, 2019
There is nothing stopping Tre from announcing earlier, but I won't be convinced until 4/17 and the letter is in.

As of today, we have 3 commits and 2 known departures (RH and Pip). From the poll, Cobb is the next most likely to go and that's not surprising. I'm pretty sure that MM has a good idea of who else is leaving so he knows how many recruits he needs. I just don't want any unpleasant surprise departures.

And ND isn't even in his top 6.

Tony Bergeron is pretty active on Twitter and pays attention to what goes on in "our world". Check out this discussion:

Just an FYI......just because someone has him ranked 72, 73, 81 or wherever, doesn’t mean they are right! 💯. Kid destroyed kids that were ranked higher ALL YEAR! Looked like a Varsity v JV matchup vs three bigs that are all Top 50. Jarreau is a super as well! Love his game!Tony Bergeron added,

Tre Mitchell is obviously a great, but I’ve heard people say he’d be our best recruit in a long time. Wasn’t Jarreau ranked about 50 spots higher as a recruit than Mitchell though? I’m not saying Mitchell won’t be better as a college player, but IIRC Jarreau was a better recruit

WA Prep tagged a bunch of us on Twitter this morning...
6-9 Tre Mitchell and 6-3 TJ Weeks will start their official visits to Umass tomorrow morning.

^ If I was a betting man, I'd say the deal has been wrapped up, Bergeron is coming on board, as is Tre Mitchell and TJ Weeks... the official visits are just a formality.

Starting to get some legs from tweeters/writers who, given their current positions, I'd expect to be pretty cautious about this stuff.

We've got every element you could ask for to get kids like this to attend UMass. Great school/education, great campus, great facilities, strong conference (not Power 5 I know) and visibility.

We just haven't had the right elements all come together, but we know they can, it's already been proven in the past with lesser facilities, lesser funding, lower profile, less advantages (miracle Cal).

Ever the optimist, I choose to believe this might be the beginning of a UMass basketball renaissance.

Never mind Cal, look at the talent Mark Schmidt can bring in.

So in addition to the fact that Tony Bergeron is Tre Mitchell's coach, here's another wrinkle to help explain why TB and Tre are a package deal. This is a tweet from Tre Mitchell's mother...
