Julius Erving

Post by tom mclaughlin » Sat Jan 06, 2018 10:33 am

Last night in Pa @ a 76’ers game where they were honoring Julius for his famous Cradel Dunk of 35 years ago he was taken from the arena to a hospital for evaluation and was expected to be released. I was with Julius four weeks ago in Boston and spent the afternoon with him and he looked terrific. He looked as trim as ever and he was as natural as he always is. Hopefully it’s nothing serious and he is truly a great guy with a big family. His son Jules is a Freshman @ Cal Berkley and Julius is so proud of him.

When’s the last time Julius visited Amherst?

Hopefully it was only flu symptoms or something. To this day, I have a poster of "The Doctor" from my UMASS days still hanging in my house. My all time favorite player

He was at the Jack Leaman memorial service in 2004.

"Jack didn’t have any envy in him," Calipari said. "He was the greatest coach to ever coach here."

Julius has stayed connected to UMass through the years. He has been back for the Jack Leaman Memorial as well as several other events. He is very proud of his UMass days and keeps in regular touch with teammates. He also had Ray Wilson work daily with him for years. Julius also ran a basketball camp on campus.
I know he was very interested in having UMass recruit his son Jules. Says a lot about him that he wanted his son in Amherst. It turned out well for Jules as he ended up at Cal as a student.
If you’re a UMass person and run into Julius just tell him you are from UMass and his face will light up.

Agree on above - hopefully he recovers soon.

To me, Julius is one of the classiest NBA players of all time, the epitome of grace and sportsmanship. That he is of UMASS is bonus.

Julius is who got me hooked on UMass basketball. As others have posted he’s a class act. I’ll add...a down to earth class act.

I used to go to the Hall of Fame induction dinners regularly. At one of them, Julius escorted one of the inductees...I don’t remember if it was Cheryl Miller or Lynnette Woodard. Kevin McHale was at this one too. I wanted to get Kevin’s autograph, but he had bodyguards. I had to give my program to the bodyguard who handed it to Kevin to sign, which he did. He then gave it back to the bodyguard who handed it back to me. As I made my way back to my table, I saw Julius sitting at his. I stopped by to ask Julius for his autograph. He pulled out a chair and said, “Have a seat”. We talked got a while before he signed my program “to a fellow UMie”.

I wish him a speedy and complete recovery.

I got to play 18 holes with he and Jack Lehman in 1990.... The best 5 (non child birth) hours of my life. He was a terrible golfer but one of the nicest people I have ever met. The best part was hearing he and Jack rib each other the whole day.

The 1983 Sixer's are my all time favorite sports team.

Eldon, I was a HUGE Sixers fan back then. Liked the Celtics, except when they played Philly. That was probably the deepest, most talented team in history. Andrew Toney was such a Celtics killer. Got into a lot of arguments back then
