Didn't use a zone, but in the post-game said he thought about it. But the way GS was shooting it wouldn't matter.

One question regarding our long-term prospects this year may have been answered: What happens when Pipkins has an off night? He had back spasms this week, and played through it, but shot 4-for-15. The team energy from the last two games had visibly dropped, though there was effort.

I give them a complete pass on this one, this was a huge upset for GS really. It happens, we actually played pretty well. GS is like top 20 in steals and opponent turnovers so that is the game to expect. In addition, 4 of the last 6 3s were well defended and "bad shots" . Without those 4 hailmarys they lose. If they shot 40% from 3 as a team they lose. It was just the type of non-sense that happens in hoops.

In the post-game McCall said they would have to look at the tape to see what happened with those 3's. He clearly was upset about it, but I found it interesting that he didn't pretend to offer any diagnosis other than everyone--players and coaches all--were at fault. I'll be interested in hearing what his analysis will be, although there's no guarantee that will make it to the public.

Thomas & Simonds of GSU came into the game shooting below 30% on threes, they were 7-10 last night. If even just those two shoot above their average and go 3-10 that's 12 fewer points.

UMass' 3pt defense wasn't great, but it wasn't terrible either. Combine GSU's hot shooting with Pipkins back trouble and off night and UMass was fucked. Factor in that CJ had a terrible game and I'm kinda shocked UMass led most of the way and only lost by 8. Shit happens. I was mostly frustrated at the excessive turnovers and inability to get Holloway the ball more often.

I was actually really happy to hear McCall take some of the blame in his post-game presser.

On most of their last 7 threes they ran pick plays and the shooter shot immediately. Our defender just couldn't get there quickly enough and even when they did the ball still went in. If they go 3 for 7 or even 4 for 7 we are in the game.

What also hurt was the offensive foul call on a Holloway made basket. Cost us 2 and they made a 3. They had a 7 point lead which would have been 5 with 1:34 left and instead it turned into a 10 point lead which was too much to overcome.

Disagree with those suggesting our 3 point shooting defense was ok. GS had a ton of wide open 3s and MM was clearly unhappy with the defense in the post-game. He termed what happened "unacceptable." He mentioned that they improperly played a number of screens that led to the open looks. I think that their defensive play this year has generally been very good, particularly at the 3 pt line, but not last night and that's why MM put some of the blame on the coaches for not doing a good enough job of preparing the team. I understand that you wouldn't expect GS to shoot 64% on even wide open 3s but don't suggest that they weren't mostly wide open.

^ Agree. Our 3pt defense was not good, especially compared to what it has been this season. Coach McCall has really drilled these guys to protect and run guys off the 3 point line and force teams to drive and try to finish in the paint against our talented bigs. We'll see a major improvement on 3pt defense tomorrow I'm sure.

^ Was it good? No, but it wasn't terrible either. GSU was hitting everything in that 2nd half, open 3's, contested 3's, deep 3's and off the dribble 3's. GSU got a combined 7-10 3pt night from the equivalent of CJ and Unique.

I didn't see it with my own two eyes, so I can't really comment on the D. With that said, sometimes people/teams get hot and hit everything. D could have been fantastic and those shots were falling regardless. Or that D could have sucked and those shots were falling regardless.

One thing is for sure... if there were defensive lapses on any of the 3s throughout the game, we know this coach will fix them and those who don't heed those adjustments will sit.

Thomas & Simonds went 1-6 on 3's last night vs Chattanooga, But GSU still routed Chatt by 23. I firmly believe UMass wins that game vs GSU 4 out of 5 times.

I was really hoping not to continue the debate about just how bad the 3 pt defense was but you make it hard. What exactly do you think MM was blaming the coaches for? Or that he thought was "unacceptable? I will give you a clue - THE 3 POINT SHOOTING DEFENSE.

As to your last point, I am not sure what could possibly be more irrelevant than your opinion as to who would win games that will never happen. I do wonder, however, whether you would apply the same logic to Friday's game in which UM won largely due to shooting 11-15 on 3s to start the game.

^ Not once did I say UMass' 3pt shooting defense was good against GSU, because for the most part it was poor, but not abysmal and certainly not bad enough where I'd expect the opposing team to shoot 65% from 3. I won't re-watch to confirm, but as I recall many of their made 3's in the 2nd half were not wide open or easy. And what I was really pointing out is that two of GSU's poor 3pt shooters were lights out in this game, you let those two take 3's with no one else on the court and they probably make 50% of them. The outcome of this game was an aberration, UMass wins it most of the time... point being I think UMass is the better team, they just weren't better on that night. You could make the case that Georgia vs UMass was a similar situation (in reverse) with UMass being the better team on that day but Georgia winning that game more often than not.

The Maine game isn't really comparable because 11 of UMass's 13 made 3's were from Pipkins and Pierre who are excellent 3pt shooters (both over 40% on the year).
