The results seem to indicate that saying the staff has done an unreal job is overstating the case .
Game 2 (2017) Coastal Carolina

All due respect, and I mean that from the bottom of my heart, I'm gonna pass.

I've said it many times before, and reluctantly, I'll say it again...UMass football does NOT belong with the big boys! They are more apt to find some success playing the JMU, W & M, Stony Brook, etcs. of the world. The staff, facilities, fan support, university support do not themselves to big time D1 success!
I saw both Coastal, and JMU play in separate games last year, and was quite sure that Coastal would beat UMass.

Still disagree with line of thinking for many reasons. Foremost is FCS football loses too much money and not sustainable especially in NE. URI, Maine, and UNH survive, but do not the have A10 HE combination like UMass-yes Maine and UNH are in Hockey East, but small hoops, the reverse is there for URI. UMass is also much larger than those institutions. Its either FBS or no football IMO. We will lose to FCS teams from the south. Missing the boat 40 years ago hurt. All of the hoops teams UMass used to play are all FBS football or no football. We should be able to do what Rutgers does.BillGASox1 wrote: Mon Sep 04, 2017 4:25 pm I've said it many times before, and reluctantly, I'll say it again...UMass football does NOT belong with the big boys! Other than the Champions Center and a great campus, what else is there? Maybe the campus is enough to convince them, but I don't know.78 wrote: Mon Sep 04, 2017 12:26 am ^^^

Bamford has erased McCutcheon
Re: Game 2 (2017) Coastal Carolina
I was a big proponent of having Coach Whipple come back.
Now there is little question,in my mind, that he is not the same coach he was15 years ago. He has terribly failed to improve the program and the defense has been terrible.
No reason we should not be able to compete against the likes of Hawaii and Coastal Carplina
In 3 months hopefully Bamford will find a competent coach.

Re: Game 2 (2017) Coastal Carolina
Was he ever a good coach or did he just catch lightning in a bottle? They won the championship in his first year, and it was a mixed bag after that. It's not coincidence that his first 2 years at Umass Don Brown was the DC either. He's the same guy that reportedly got passed over by Jeff Jagodzinski and Paul Pasqualoni (according to wikipedia) for other jobs.

"Fun to watch"? I'm happy when the games are a speck better than pure torture to watch. Fun left the station a while ago.
Re: Game 2 (2017) Coastal Carolina
Don Brown got more press during Michigan's win over Florida than Harbaugh did. That should tell you the caliber of coach that Brown is.kdogg8173 wrote: Tue Sep 05, 2017 10:28 am Was he ever a good coach or did he just catch lightning in a bottle? ^^^^ Don Brown ditched us twice. He is dead to me.
Re: Game 2 (2017) Coastal Carolina
Didn't we pass him over when we re-hired Whipple?

Don Brown was turned down in favor of Whip. I saw literally the day after Whip was hired on a recruiting visit for BC. We didn't have a conversation, but he acknowledged my effort to say I wished he was in Amherst. So, I can't 100% say he was in the running because the response was purely body language. He aslo did not ditch us the first time. He was hired as a DC @ Maryland. He ditched Northeastern.
Re: Game 2 (2017) Coastal Carolina
I know a relative of his quite well (went to UMass together). Don Brown was interested in coming back and we went with Whip over him.minutefanjsf wrote: Tue Sep 05, 2017 3:00 pmDon Brown was turned down in favor of Whip. I wanted Whipple, but it clear we made a mistake
