Candidates for 2017 UMass HC vacancy

Post by NilesGold » Thu Feb 09, 2017 4:36 pm

Just to pass the time during the tail end of this lost season, I thought it might be fun to come up with a list of potential candidates to fill our future HC vacancy if/when Kellogg is fired. Once we have a bunch of names I'll do a poll. Anyway, here's what I've got, post any names you want added and I'll edit this post to include them.

Al Skinner
Kevin Keatts (UNCW)
David Richman (ND State)
Scott Cherry (High Point)
Lamont Paris (Associate Head Coach at Wisconsin)
Matt McCall (UT-Chatt)
Mike Davis (Texas Southern)
Earl Grant
Keith Dambrot
Dan Muller
Niko Medved - Furman
Andy Toole - Robert Morris
Bashir Mason - Wagner
Mitch Henderson - Princeton
Mark Schmidt - Bona
Tim Cluess (Iona)
King Rice (Monmouth)
Jay Larranaga
Kyle Smith (University of San Francisco)
Pat Kelsey (Winthrop)
Pat Skerry
John Becker
Bill Coen
Paul Weir
Bruce Weber

Below have been mentioned but for various reasons I think are extremely unlikely and shouldn't be included in the list.
Chris Collins
John Calipari
Tory Verdi
Tony Barbee

Personally have no interest in an older coach like Skinner.. would prefer a young up and comer from a low/ lower mid major. He was an assistant at Bryant and now a head coach not doing much at kennasaw state. If you are Bamford I think you go all in on Keatts and hope to retain most of the players. We could double his Salary very easily with the opportunity to close to triple it.. plus this is only his third year of HC experience, this year is really our last chance to nab him.. after this one I think he may be out of our reach

Interesting fact: Keatts coached Freddie Riley in HS

Edit:: if Somehow we are right and Keatts is named our next head coach this year.. I will personally open a $500 beer tab at the hanger for any board members that wants to celebrate the occasion.

Not 100% sold on Mike Davis either, which is why he is last on my list. But there is definitely some intrigue with the idea and he would absolutely be an upgrade.

No chance with Chris Collins at this point. Why would he leave the Big 10?

No to Skinner, especially if you want to keep these kids. Can't see these young guns sticking around for an older coach who is going run the flex offense.

My top choices:

1. Matt McCall-Chattanooga
2. Niko Medved- Furman
3. Andy Toole- Rober Morris
4. Dave Richman- ND State
5. Bashir Mason- Wagner
6. Kvein Keatts- Wilmington
7. Mitch Henderson- Princeton
8. Mark Schmidt- St. Bonnie
9. IV- UMasshoops.com
Hire Matt McCall!

^ sorry, but Schmidt reminds me way too much of Baron and that means that he is best suited where he is.

I still don't think DK is getting the axe at the end of this season, but I'll play along. What about Tony Barbee? I know he didn't last long at Auburn, but he did do a great job at UTEP, and I was hoping that he was going to be the hire here after Ford left.

Tory Verdi. Why not?
Raise the bar, do the minimum.
