Not to get into a pissing contest on this issue, it was Bill Russell that said he was not a good coach and that just because you played professional basketball didn't necessarily make you a basketball coach.

I understand the point you're making and I don't disagree that great players don't necessarily making good coaches.

That said, Bill Russell saying he was not a 'good' coach isn't the same as calling him a 'bad' one.

Not that it added any pressure, given the times, but he was also the first black head coach in the NBA and in any of the pro team sports in the US, for that matter.

You're right about him only being a player coach with the Celtics. Between 73/74-76/77, when he coached in Seattle, he didn't play. He was out for eleven years before he coached Sacramento for one season in 87/88.

Bill Russell was a player coach in those days. He was also playing 40 MPG...

He did not play, when he coached, 1973 through 1988. He played and coached 1966 through 1969. He did not play or coach 69 through 1973.

I should have included the post someone had about him winning back to back championships. He was a player/coach for those years. Outside of those, he was roughly a .500 coach.

Let's not diminish the accomplishment that is winning back to back NBA championships. It doesn't happen all that often. I understand that Russell the coach had the Russell the player on the team, but those Celtics teams were getting older Bill was what 33-35 years old at the time, (old for a player, young for acoach)?

His record as a coach is what it is. My only point was that it's not fair to refer to him as a 'bad' coach.
