Of course. What am I thinking? Our athletic program is in such good shape, his salary should he doubled and his contract extended forever.

He's definitely not the greatest AD of all time... But I don't think he's going anywhere with the current administration. Swammy doesn't give a crap about UMass athletics. So, as long as the program isn't a total disaster he's staying.

Raise the bar, do the minimum.

Yup. This x1000.. Show me a more qualified AD that is a realistic option and I might consider it. Very volatile time right now in NCAA athletics.. Not sure I want a new and/or unfamiliar face steering our program right now, even if the current captain may seem not long for his post.ktabz16 wrote:it's not an either or answer. just because someone isn't right for the job for life, doesn't mean they should be fired right now.

Prior to McCutch and not counting the Grey Wolf's one year stay UMass has only had three athletic directors in my lifetime. Marcum had the shortest tenure ('93-'02) but before him Big Frank was around for twenty and McGuirk longer than him.
Dr.G can give us a history lesson on UMass athletic directors so rather than do any research I'll wait for him to chime in on this thread.

Problem with McCutch is that he doesn't give a shit about the hockey program. I'm realistic and agree with most people here that unless UMass knows of a good AD to replace McCutch right away there is no point in firing him now. I do think he is pretty useless. The school was lucky that Whipple came in or else the football program would still be a shit show. The school justs needs to develop a quality hockey program and frankly, I don't think that'll happen under McCutch.

The hockey program has had 4 winning seasons since it was reinstated in 1993. The problem goes far beyond McCutcheon

So?? Don't you think it's the AD's job to, I don't know...TRY TO FIX IT?!?!? Just because the hockey program has been in shambles for years doesn't mean that McCutch should absolved of his responsibility to make the program more prominent and competitive. Even if it wasn't his fault in the beginning he's here now, and I for one would like to see him take a more active interest in the hockey program. I'm sick and tired of losing season after losing season.Refuse2Lose83 wrote:The hockey program has had 4 winning seasons since it was reinstated in 1993. The problem goes far beyond McCutcheon

Decent topic, but I just don't check out this forum too often when football is in midseason, hockey has started, and basketball is just around the corner. I'd bet there are others who have strong opinions on the AD (I don't, but appreciate the chance to read the opinions of his defenders and detractors), but haven't checked out the forum lately or haven't had time to respond.ktabz16 wrote:i realize you're trying to provoke a discussion, but it's literally crickets in here.

^^ Should he be doing a better job with hockey? It's debatable. Should he lose his job because the hockey program sucks and has sucked for the majority of it's years since it's been back? No. Other than hiring a coach what more can he do? The facilities are good. They play in an elite conference. The program has failed because of the coaching and the recruiting more so than anything. And yes the process of hiring a coach that finally brought us Micheletto was an embarrassment, but once hired he has/had to be given time to see what he could do. It is now year 3, a time when programs should be getting better under a new coach. So if we have no no improvement come March/April then McCutcheon should fire him and if he doesn't then I start to question the AD. And then I would expect a much better hiring process then last time. Much of the problems of the last search were the AD's fault, but it was also the coaches who were being interviewed dropping out, and other problems. DK didn't have a winning year till year 4, and no one (or at least the masses) was calling for McCutcheon's head. 2 of our 3 major sports are trending in the right direction with hockey getting an incomplete grade right now, and that's good enough for me at the moment.

Rocks can correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think the hockey team has the best facilities compared to other schools around Hockey East.Refuse2Lose83 wrote:^^ Should he be doing a better job with hockey? Didn't say the best, but they are quality. Our guys aren't training and playing in subpar facilities.

Re: I really think the time has come to can McCutcheon
The problem with the hockey coach search process is that McCutcheon fired Toot in like July, which is ridiculous and which left him no time to find a new coach. In my opinion, this was a complete screwup by McCutcheon. And, while womens' basketball is not a major sport around here, his coaching decision there was a disaster. Molnar was also a disaster, as of course was elevating Morris to head coach. Some good things have happened, but I think McCutcheon has far more warts than positives.Refuse2Lose83 wrote:^^ Should he be doing a better job with hockey? It's debatable. Hopefully Rocks will weigh in, but I believe our hockey training facilities are below average in Hockey East.Refuse2Lose83 wrote:Didn't say the best, but they are quality. Our guys aren't training and playing in subpar facilities.
