The Non-Conference Opponents/RPI Update Thread

Post by DS Bruce Robertson » Mon Nov 29, 2004 5:56 pm

How about we keep tabs on what the RPI fodder is up to in one thread this year?. Now that I've got the ball rolling, I'll bet someone is enterprising enough to keep this updated with the games our non-conference foes are playing that night and the results the next morning. Right? Right??

Through games of November 28th:

Past:
Birmingham Southern (4-2) W: Alabama A&M, Northeastern, Marist, Tennessee Weslyan, L: Missisippi St, UMass
Yale (1-3) W: Hartford L: Radford, Wake Forest, UMass

Upcoming:
Northeastern (1-2) W: Cornell L: Birmingham Southern, Harvard
Gonzaga (3-1) W: Portland St., Montana, Idaho L: Illinios
uconn (1-0) W: Buffalo L: None
Miami (1-2) W: Wofford L: South Carolina St., Xavier
Davidson (2-2) W:Missouri, Maine-Farmington L: Duke, St. Joe's (PA)
Rider (1-1) W: Drexel, L: Bucknell
Boston University (2-1) W: Fordham, Youngstown St., L: Holy Cross
Boston College (3-0) W: Maine, New Hampshire, Clemson L: None
Florida St. (2-3) W: Texas Southern, Shawnee St. L: Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, Kent St., TCU

As of 11/29, UMass' RPI is #42

Sagarin's ratings have UMass at 146.

I don’t know if this is the “official” RPI, but it has UMass at 38!

The RPI is meaningless until mid-January or so. Sagarin is primed with the preceding season so it is marginally less meaningless. But only marginally.

At the time of this post, UMass is #33, one spot ahead of Memphis. I love November RPI's. After the 4-0 start in 2001, some sites had UMass with the #1 RPI ranking.

Just for point of perspective. The RPI system is designed factor in the results of an entire season. It was never intended to be unveiled or displayed or whatever before February or March.

I completely understand that it's ridiculously skewed now. If anything, that's part of the fun of watching it. But as this thread is dedicated to opponents inasmuch as they affect UMass' RPI, I think it will be interesting to see how it fluctuates after each game or if some of the opponents rip off some winning streaks.

Ken Pomeroy is pretty dead0n by Mid-January. Even now his projection doesn't look crazy.

Pomeroy is "OK" but Sagarin, Greenfield http://www.teamrankings.com/ncb/, Massey http://www.mratings.com/rate/cb-m.htm and Sauceda http://www.mratings.com/rate/cb-s.htm are better. Early in the season, all of the above systems are suspect because of the lack of data. Some prime thier data, others don't. Some of them aren't even reporting ratings yet. All of these guys are far better than the RPI. The RPI is a joke at actually rating the performance of a team. Its only relevance is that the NCAA is still dumb enough to use it when seeding the tournamant. However I have heard that they are at least considering Sagarin's ratings now and possibly some of the others.

Ken Pomeroy publishes his predictions. I'd love to see an anlysis of his predictions versus the Vegas line. In my experience he's been pretty damn good.

Speaking of predictions, Tony Mejia at CBS Sportsline has us winning 76-71. He's got an 81.4% success rate.
