Most forgivable loss of the season, if that's allowed to be a thing.

I was higher than most of you on the first half besides the last minute. Vintage Sampson and cady and everyone played well but Chaz. Dayton played very well in the first half too.

We took poor shots and had defensive lapses to start the second half and let Dayton get on that run. We then slowly chipped away to get it to 3 or so at about the 12 minute mark. Over the next 6 minutes Dayton slowly stretched it back out to 10-12. This is when we lost the game. We missed a ton of make able shots in a row in this stretch. Can't win road games if you don't make your shots.

I really want Putney to have a good offensive game in these next 2. Need him confident in Brooklyn/the next tournament.

Agree with others that Maxie looks off.

We hardly ever win when Chaz plays poorly the whole game. Props to Dayton, especially the pg that broke the press down the stretch all those times, for getting a win they needed.
I'm against picketing, but I don't know how to show it.

Dear 78

Dear 78:

I've been a UMass fan since Jack Leaman (and through Wilson, McLaughlin, and Gerlufsen). Calipari spoiled me. Win or lose, I love it when players give everything they got, "leave it on the floor", etc.

Get frustrated when they don't.

How we got to 22 - 6? We have a senior laden team that got off to a great start against non conference foes. Could have beat FL State, if the basketball gods were kinder. Record against the A 10 is 9 - 5. respectable, but not great.

A10 coaches know us, know Chaz (who's carried us since his arrival); some have even figured out the key to beating us is neutralizing Chaz. Today's a good example.

Why can't we adjust when Chaz can't get into the paint, drive and dish, etc.?

You think my observations/comments were off the mark? Why? Why do you watch 78?

So, we're essentially 7 deep. Too bad none of the first years can play. Could have used them. Why did DK recruit them?
How do you come to the conclusion that none of our first year guys can play?

DK needed to get into the bench today. We needed some minutes from Dyson and Santee, even just to spell Samp and Put.

Samp can be real effective (he was on fire to start the game today) but he gets gassed because 1. his conditioning isn't great, and 2. DK has him play way too many minutes.

100% agree. He played too much in the 1st half.

Sums it up perfectly. Weak side boxing out is something that has to be pounded home to this team.

Facetious

Post by baseline47 » Sat Mar 01, 2014 3:13 pm

Big_John_Studd,

I was being facetious. DK won't play them so, apparently he doesn't think they can play/help. I don't know if they can play or not.

I'll tell you this, I'd rather have a few of them on the floor, hustling their butts off, and lose, rather then staying with guys who, for whatever reason, aren't hustling.

How can Sampson not be in shape? He's been playing/practicing since what, October 1st?

I think DK's made a mistake by not playing the first years. But, what do I known, I'm just a fan?

Oh, and one other point: does anyone else get pissed when multiple UMass players NEVER dive when the ball is on the floor. Sure, one guy might bend over and get it, but watch the next few games and you'll see two to three opponents sprawled out on the floor to our one guy.

Maybe I'm hypersensitive to this because my wife is from Nova, and they are one of the best in the country at hitting the deck. But our guys, they couldn't be bothered... One of the worst things about watching this team.

DK postgame:

"They came up with a few more 50-50 balls in the middle of the game, and that led to baskets. Every time they got a 50-50 or one of those loose balls, it led to a 3-pointer or an and-1.

"Three loose balls that you don't get or rebounds you get knocked out of the way on, that's 6-8-10-12 points because then we can't go the other way (in transition)."

Chaz, to his credit, told the rest of the team that the loss was on him. From MassLive:

Williams, who told his teammates after the game that "this game was all on me," looked particularly off kilter.

I'd like to see the freshmen too but I'm sure DK just doesn't feel comfortable trusting freshmen in what is / has been one of the most critical seasons for the program in a long time.

Making the tournament is absolutely essential for us. We have the new champions center opening up, we have a good group of players coming back next year, making the tourny and winning a game or 2 would be huge.

The current freshmen can and will play next year.

I'm fine with losing with all of our best players on the floor and that's what happened today.

It's the defensive rebounding that really irks me. I don't get why a team with this kind of length and athleticism can't figure out a way to give a consistent effort on the defensive glass for anything close to 40 minutes. I just don't get it.

A few very nice things today....our 2 best players on the floor all game are sophomores. And Cady played with more energy. It's not just the fact that they didn't double him, that helped. But overall, he got after it more.

Dayton played well. We played hard for the most part, but they played desperate. Very talented offensive team. They played hard and shot well, and that's a lot to overcome when Chaz has an off day.

I don't think the loss is "horrible" or "concerning" in any way. If we played a very good game, we would have had a good chance to win. We didn't. It happens. It doesn't mean Chaz stinks, it doesn't mean the coach stinks, it doesn't mean the freshmen and TBerg need to transfer. The lack of perspective from some on here after a loss is nothing short of incredible.

overall observations.
As far as playing freshman never been a strong point of DK. The guys looked gassed in the second half especially Cady he was barely moving just before his 4th foul. I too wish he mixed in some freshman for short minutes and energy.
Sampson and Gordon have really improved from the start of the year which is a positive although this is offset a bit by Putney's drop off. He has to realize he can't hit a 3 on the move. He shoots best on a pass out when he is still and then goes up. he has never hit a 3 when he is moving and tries to stop and pop.
This was not an expected win so in that sense not too angry but this makes the game at Dusquesne very important because if the guys go in there and take them lightly they will get beat. Don't want to end season on a potential 3 game losing streak.

I expect Chaz to bring it from here on out. He's too good, and it means too much to him to end his career on any kind of sour note.

I suspect today was Bad Chaz' Senior Day, and Bad Chaz isn't making any tournament. Later, Bad Chaz.

DK said at the beginning of conference play that he wouldn't play freshman on the road in conference. Obviously if he NEEDS to he will, but he wants to play the guys with the experience necessary in tough road environments.

I didn't really think we played that badly today, we just let Dayton have one run that gave them the lead for good at the end of the first half into the second half. We defend the 3 point line better and win the battle on the boards and we probably win despite Chaz having a down game.
