I just watched it again. Man, were we lazy on defense in the first half. We competed better in the second, but the damage was done....the Mason players were feeling it and playing well.

Kellogg was perfect late in the game, and Chaz was just plain amazing. I really like what I'm seeing from Trey Davis as well. He has some big stones and will be a big part of our success in close games for a long time.

I thought Putney put together another good game, and the importance of his strong play cannot be overstated. The drive and dish to Cady late was awesome, and he is really picking his spots on the three ball, with one exception last night.

Hanging out with the DC contingent of UMies at the pre event and making some noise during the game made me proud to be an alum. Klyde did a great job organizing the get together and you could tell it was truly appreciated by everyone in attendance.

After the win, we ran down above the tunnel where the team was filing off of the court. The raw emotion of the players, coaches and fans was unreal. Chaz shot his nasty sweat-soaked headband into the crowd and my buddy came away with it, haha. Without pause, he threw that disgusting thing on and we continued our celebration! But the best part of the night, hands down, was the guy who brought some sort of mini trumpet to the game. After we yelled down to the team, he started playing the UMass fight song and the whole UMass crowd got the GO.... GO U... GO UMass... GO UMASS chant going as we marched right out the front door together. I won't forget it.
Your buddy caught the headband right in front of me (all his). What great game to be at as a UMass alum. The energy from the UMass contingent was unbelievable!!! My wife (GMU grad) ran out the building after the game--guess what--I could have cared less after that game. She said she wanted to beat the traffic--yeah right. GO UMASS!

A couple fun facts:

Chaz passed four players on the all-time scoring list and is now the school's all-time leading scorer among players who were here less than four years. (from 16th up to 12th overall, passing Erving and Camby)

That was the first time the Patriots have hosted a nationally ranked team. Coincidentally, the Saturday game will also be the first time Elon has hosted a nationally ranked team.

I think it was the first time since 1986 or 1987 when they hosted David Robinson's Navy team.

Sorry I was wrong on this. It was the first time they hosted a nationally ranked team at the Patriot Center, but you're right they'd hosted ranked teams before.

Glad to hear you watch with your wife (UMass grad or just likes what your like?)... My *Sweetie* usually stays upstairs because I "yell" and "act crazy" during the game."

Actually I put this post in the wrong topic.

Neither of us are college grads. I went to UMass the spring semester in 1960, after four years in the Navy, but after about four weeks I decided that college was not for me. I was trained to be a electronic tech in the Navy and got a job at Sprague Electric after I got out of the Navy in July of 59. Had to wait until second semester to start school. What a difference the campus was back then. Only about 7,500 students, no hi rise dorms, FB stadium or BB court - Cage back then. My roommate in Brooks was one of my good friends from grammar and high school. After I left school I got my job back at Sprague and after about six years I was able to get into GE in Pittsfield. Never have regretted leaving school.

When my friend graduated he got a job in NJ and when McGurk opened we started going to FB games when he would come back for homecoming. He took a job with a bank in Pittsfield 68 and we went to few BB games when the DR. was a freshman. We got season tickets for BB and FB the year after. He left for Ohio around 90 and I kept my season tickets for FB until a year ago but gave up BB around 2000. There were several of us from GE and Pittsfield that had season tickets back then.

I have been married for 35 years now and my wife would go to an occasional game with me starting when we had the good BB teams when Cal was here. she has gone to the UNH games at Foxboro and a few others and goes to the weekend BB games with me. She will poke her head in when I am watching a game in my TV/computer room. If a game is interesting like last night she hangs in and watches with me. We went to two BB games this year and expect to go to probably two more this year.

Our son graduated from UMass in 2004 and works for MGM in Vegas. He makes it home for a FB game or two every year and he picked up tickets for the VCU game a while ago and is flying in for the game so we can go to that game together. We plan to go to the pre game affair that IV is planning. He knows IV from when they went to UMass.

what a crazy game. There was about 20 seconds of game time where I was pretty sure they were going to lose, but on the whole, I am remarkably confident in the team. Last night's play perfectly characterized what we have been seeing for the last few games. They didn't play as well as we think they can, they are going to get bit by it sometime, but it wasn't last night! They found a way to win when they needed to, but the end of that game was truly absurd.

The good news: the team has a fantastic record, their games are exciting, they have experience in close endings, a knack for winning, and we know they have an extra gear.

Here's a take-away from this game. Why did GMU lose? Because they had no time outs left to call when they got in trouble in-bounding the ball. Because they had used up their time outs. Remember this when you want to criticize DK for not calling time out late in the game. May be better to save those TOs for emergencies.

Yes he was. He noticed the attention he got when he said his degree was from the Isenburg School of Management.

It will be a grand old time, but be sure to bring your drinking shoes!
