I really think this to be the case. The timing of the firing seemed weird to me unless they already had someone (Whipple) signed, sealed, and delivered.

^the retention of Carr as a search consultant indicates that there is going to be a vetting of other potential candidates to determine if there are any other suitable options. I'd like to see Whipple or Brown return. Either scenario would be very good for the program. Favoring Whipple b/c of his proven ability to develop QBs.

^ The hiring of Carr could just be window dressing to show that they have done their "due diligence" in hiring a new coach. Perhaps the external source paid for this too.

The Carr group was brought in to thoroughly vet each possible candidate because UMass cannot afford another public relations nightmare. This hire at a minimum needs to be very good at public relations.
While winning is the ultimate goal, until we build our program and become competitive the outward appearance of the program needs to drastically improve.
I will say from initial appearances all facets of the University seem to be committed to finding the right HC to move this program forward.

Carr was brought in to assist in the search regardless of whether or not they have a candidate in mind. Given the state of the program, you need the right guy and you can't afford to give yourself tunnel vision on one candidate because there is always a chance you get burnt (I.e. if we are negotiating with Whip and he gets offered an OC position in the NFL he may decide to go there). It is too costly from a pure dollar cost as well as from a PR perspective to start over (didn't we see that from the Hockey search couple of years ago?).
It is also worth noting, and I am not sure anyone has yet, that Whip and McCutcheon never worked together at UMass (AD came on in 2004 while Whip left in 2003). It's not like old war buddies coming together to hash out the old days, you have no idea how the two will interact.

Actually, per Matty V and others, Carr was not brought in for the coaches search. They were already there helping Umass with other issues/considerations not necessarily related to the HC. Also, a poster on Bob's MM (Umass.247sports) is claiming that we shouldn't be surprised to see Whipple AND Don Brown back at Umass. Whipple as HC and DB as Assistant HC (I am adding that)/DC. Don't know if it is true, but so far, this poster has been on with his inside info.

My reading between the lines is yes and no. It is going to cost more than Molnar and his staff, but not to the point where it is too much. Some of the cost would come from the Outside source(s) that provided the $ to buyout CM. Also, it appears, apart of this is that Whip and DB are friends and like Umass and wanted to stay but only as an FBS school which is now a reality. Another part.. and this is me talking... is to build on their legacy. True, they have gone to other places and had success, but for Whip, his is winning a Nat'l Championship and for DB, also winning one and playing in another. In other words, their greatest success in the college ranks was at Umass... Again this is just me talking....

Has there been any indication whatsoever that Brown wants to leave BC to be a defensive coordinator in a lesser conference? I would be more than happy if that were the case I'm just wondering if those of you who are hearing this rumor have heard why he'd jump?

Just a thought, probably won't make a difference, but I emailed the chancellor hoping for such a scenario. He actually emailed back and appreciated the input.......if you feel that strongly about it, maybe do the same.

Two words: State Pensions.
You only need 10 years of service to collect a pension. That would leave Brown needing 3 years, and Whipple 4.
