Marcus Camby Article

Post by Mrbaseball220 » Mon Mar 23, 2009 8:33 am

Here is an article I found on Boston.com, I thought some might be interested in.

http://www.boston.com/sports/basketball ... wth_spurt/

Great article. It is nice to see him understanding the mistake he made and owning up to it. I had no idea he payed the money back and was so active in charities. I really hope to see him back at Umass sooner rather then later.

That was a very good article, and for the first time addressed whether or not UMass was willing to have any kind of relationship with him. UMass got screwed for being somewhat upfront with the NCAA when it all started crashing down. If Reggie Bush can have his number retired at USC, there is no reason why Marcus Camby can't have his retired at UMass. The guy put UMass on the map in the modern era of college basketball which is far more than one of the purchased retired numbers that hang on the wall can say.

Love this article. Does anyone know what the rules are for retiring numbers at UMass? Do you have to finish all 4 years and graduate to be considered? Whatever the rule is, I'd like there to be an exception in the case of Camby.

I find it interesting that the author's last name is Spears.....

Anyway, someone should walk this article over to CHB and let him stew over it a bit.

Very good article. Really answered a lot of the questions about Camby and his relationship with the school.

Great article.

I especially like the part of trying to get him more involved with the school now. It would be cool to see him at the Memphis game with Cal at the Garden next season. At Mullins would be nice to.

An awesome experiment would be to assign the same article to Shaughnessy and see how the finished product differs from Spears' piece.

When I first saw the article I was kind of hoping Shaughnessy wrote it 8)

Here's a great comment from that Globe article:
Can someone answer me this question.....Why does UMASS get penalized for what Camby did, but USC walks away without any penalties for what Reggie Bush did? Bush's family lived in a house piad for by a booster and USC didn't know about it?? Please.................
My (admittedly biased) take on that:
It was very easy for the NCAA to come down on UMass, who was arguably a flash-in-the-pan with our early 90s success, than USC, who had much more established success in their sport. Also, the revenue that USC football generates for the NCAA is dozens of times over what UMass basketball did. The NCAA had a lot more to lose by cracking down on USC than UMass.

And yet they're still a tax-exempt organization

Right, Mike, but that would mean that there's a double standard, something the NCAA would never admit to.

Don't know if its really that similar but it looks like Florida State is getting whacked pretty hard for their "mistakes" that among other things could knock off around 10 of Bobby Bowden's victories.

Jerry Tarkanian: "The NCAA was so mad at Kentucky cheating they gave Cleveland State two more years probation."
"Jack didn’t have any envy in him," Calipari said. "He was the greatest coach to ever coach here."

I would think we probably will not see much of Marcus until he retires. However, once he does retire, I think he may get pretty involved - especially if Kellogg is coaching.

Very nice read. I wonder if the NCAA would ever seek to "pardon" UMass and officially recognize the win, based on Camby's contributions back. Then again, I doubt they would do such a thing.

Doing so would only expose them to the very questions that have been posed here. I'm sure they'd rather keep this in the closet.

Great article. I can't wait for the day that Marcus comes back to the Mullins to attend a game.

I love how Marcus describes himself as a die-hard UMass alum. I really enjoyed the press last year that mentioned how he was texting Carmelo Anthony after we beat Syracuse. Twice.
