Phil - just a small aside: not sure how your example points to 'enlightened self-interest'... breaking the obligation doesn't seem virtuous in this case.philosopher wrote: You really need to take everything you read, hear, and see with a grain of salt. I shook hands with a college department head, accepting a job offer as an associate professor. The next day, he called me and said he was withdrawing the offer to re-hire the retiring guy I was to replace. "Hey," he said, "he liked your materials and it rejuvenated him and so I owe him the shot to teach another 5 years." My point is that employers as well as employees live by the rule of "enlightened self-interest."
Here we go again....

That's the type of reassurance that Nick Saban gave to the Dolphins fans about 15 minutes before he left for Alabama! What I want to hear from our coach is, "I like it here, I've got work to do here, I plan on staying." We're definitely not hearing that. I'd like to see us with a coach who is committed to staying a while.
What I would like to see if Coach Ford leaves, and I hope and I do not think he will this year, is a buyout clause similar to what West Virginia had withCoach Beuliein. Michigan has to pay West Virginia 2.5 million to get Beulien. I think we should have this proviso on our next coach whenewrver that might be. Perhaps 2.5 million is a bit large but say 1.5 million.
That way if a coach get a long term contract, we get something if he decides to leave prior to the contract expiring.

Unfortunately, the BCS schools have a little more leverage than we have.vanmeter wrote:What I would like to see if Coach Ford leaves, and I hope and I do not think he will this year, is a buyout clause similar to what West Virginia had withCoach Beuliein. As most people here would be quick to tell you, this applies to all coaches, but with the exception of one. It was okay for him to do that very thing.MassDynasty321 wrote:Get the new contract with TF signed. If I am not mistaken, TF had just signed an extention with EKU before he left to take the job here.Get the new contract with TF signed. Ford signed a multi-year extension at EKU in August and then left for UMass in March. So, I would not get too secure regardless of what he signs.

Turns out, just because you write your name on a baby doesn't mean you get to keep it."
Collegian has a brief article about Ford's name being floated around in regards to the WVU opening.

I certainly was not chastising Ford for leaving EKU. My point was the people who feel a sense of security when a coach signs and extension or issues a public statement is fooling themselves.ktabz16 wrote:everyone who has ever left a job for a better job better stop commenting now
Most coaches are more than happy to stare a kid and his family in the face and talk about how they will be there for the player, and then walk out the door the next week. It is just the nature of the NCAA business.

Ktabz,
Most of us do not have long term (or even) short term contracts. When you lost your job you may have gotten either nothing or a small severance. If a Basketball Coach like Coach Ford loses his job, he still get the remainder of his contract.
I am not criticizing Coaches who move up, however they get the best of both worlds.

You really need to take a deep breath and relax. USF wanted to talk with TF and he did not even go down as reported in the paper. The one little paper in West Virginia puts his name in there as a candidate and they immediately hire Huggins. Don't think that was true at all.Would K-State really want to hire another guy who would be looking to leave after a year or two?
You can't just read stuff on the web and believe it. The only job that he would be interested in, just my opinion, would be Kentucky and rightfully so. Just relax and don't assume he wants to leave when he already has turned down opportunities to interview. Just because people want to talk with him does not mean he wants to leave.
Please think before you type.
