misery in CT
Lappas and Calhoun are friends...wouldn't be suprised if Calhoun is out there lobbying for Lappas.nale wrote:Funny. If Lappas got the job Calhoon would stop playing Quinnipiac since Lappas has a decent history beating UCONN.Crank wrote:Per matty V's blog:

Lappis's problem wasn't recruiting; it was developing, and more importantly retaining players. For all his flaws, the guy somehow got people into the program.
Hey, Truth. Go fuck yourself! I guess it's easy to make your smug little comment over here, when your arrogant coach is blaming his players in the media for this season. When your spittling, slurring, lying SOB of a coach will not be held accountable for failing to develope this teams chemistry over the course 5 months. And he also eludes to the fact that some players will be better off eslewhere next year. Well that speaks volumes of a coach who unsuccessfully searches for chemistry and leadership all year that turns his back on on the young players that he lured to Storrs with delusions of grandeur only to replace them with younger players from the already diluted class of 2007 (somebody better warn Norm Roberts). Thats why it sooo convenient for you to come here. It's all they're talking about on your board. The Truth wrote:Karma
"Not pleased with what I read and the bits heard on radio and TV, but it sounds like JC is coming down way too hard on the players. Today's article in the Hartford Courant is all about paring down the roster, like the pros would do after a dismal season. No words about pulling together in the off season and reversing the disaster of this year."
"I think JC is more embarassed about tarnishing a hall of fame career than wiling to take one for the team"
"I'll be straight-up here. JC must have had a few before this interview because he's way off here. It's almost like he think he's got a pro team, and he can trade for all new players. Ain't gonna happen Jimmy. Singling out players like he's doing and putting it all back on them, I really think lacks class."
"In Garrisson's case, it was August when Marcus Williams & A.J. Price were arrested. Garrisson was scheduled for a prep year. JC needed a guard at a late date, Garrisson accepted. Regarding Ben Eaves, I've gotta' hang this on on JC for blowing it."
So again, fuck you! Calhoun will live and die by his own actions. In this case he dies and the future doesn't appear to be any brighter for next year. Be glad your pussy coach ran from us this year but he may not be able to in the NIT. That is, if conU makes it. Here's a little something for you to chew on 'til tonight from todays paper:"Personally, I think what Calhoun is doing is complete nonsense. Unless the kid embarrassed the program/university, failed out of school, etc. there is no reason to basically take a kids ship away and act like you're doing them a favor."
So you may say "karma" but the rest of us say, "The Truth hurts!""The NIT committee promises to select the 32 best teams which don't reach the NCAA field - without regard to other factors, including fan appeal, that have affected pairings in the past."
"One way UMass fans would immediately pay attention to the NIT is if the Minutemen, who were dropped from Connecticut's schedule this season, wound up playing the Huskies."
"But UConn (17-14, 111 RPI), which has been ridiculed for playing a weak schedule, has a very questionable case for NIT selection. The Huskies may find themselves out of postseason play altogether."
What Uconn does or does not do means nothing to us at this point in time. They are worlds ahead of us as a program and that is the sad truth. In CT, Uconn basketball is a huge priority. In Massachusetts, Western, MA as a whole is an after thought and often times Umass-Amherst is no exception. I have little doubt that Uconn will begin there newest run of NCAA appearances next season. I think Umass will be NIT bound for at least 2-3 more seasons (barring a win of the A-10 Tourny, which is always possible). We need to focus on doing well in post season, any post season, for now.
Several years ago during the Lappas years, I wondered if Umass could even become relevant in the A-10 again. This year, they were. It was mentioned how Umass had the #2 ranked shedule in Bruisers last year, did very well in conference and made it to the A-10 finals. By the time Lappas was done, we had become a joke. Not even a sniff at the NIT. Anthony Anderson never saw a post season game in his career.
When someone gains a lot of weight over a long period of time and the person decides to turn things around, it is unreasonable to hope to lose the weight in a small fraction of the time it took to put it on. Likewise, it took the Camby/Calipari fall out, Bruiser years and Lappas meltdown to get to where Ford started. It is gonna take some serious time to get to the point where we battling for NCAA at large bids on a regular basis. I think Calipari's results here were remarkable. He is a great coach, but some of it has to be the result of "Right place, Right time, Right players".
I know everyone is disapointed with the NIT bid, but getting there is a good step. This will help Ford establish a culture of winning in Amherst again. 5 years from now, we will probably be very pleased with the results. And as long as Ford doesnt leave under a cloud (if he leaves at all), we will find up and coming coaches with ease.
Calipari was such a god around here that when he left, Bruiser was handed the job without question. When you just made the final four and spent weeks and weeks as a #1 program, the right move would have been an up and coming person with head coaching experience running a program. Didnt happen that way. When Ford leaves, I doubt the same mistake will be made.
