Keeping an eye on the future recruits

Post by Rocks22 » Wed Oct 04, 2006 6:58 pm

The 2006 edition of this thread seemed to work out well as a central place to keep track of next year's recruits on their current teams, so thought I'd start another.

This will be the place to see how James Marcou, Brian Keane, Nick Grasso, Danny Hobbs, and any potential additions are doing. Should be easy to start as all four are playing in the USHL this season.

I don't want to read too much into it, but it's interesting to note that Grasso is not listed as a UMass recruit on either his team's roster or the main USHL college committment list. May just be an oversight, but maybe not.

Anyway, onto the news:

Hobbs scored a goal in the first ever preseason game for the brand new Ohio Junior Blue Jackets.

Also, for those with ESPNU (Comcast has yet to pick it up) the Omaha Lancers will have 10 games televised this season. You can tune in to see Hobbs and the BJs on Dec 6th and Keane and his Chicago Steel on Feb 7th. Both games are on tape delay and aired at noon.

James Marcou and Danny Hobbs have both landed on the NHL Central Scouting Players to Watch list. Both are listed as "B" or potential late rounders for next year's draft.

A little old, but Marcou was the runner-up for USHL Player of the Week a few weeks ago.

Marcou and Hobbs have been named to the USHL All Star East roster. It'll be held on Marcou's home ice in Waterloo:

Also, David Boehm was a runner-up for USHL Player of the Week last week.

At the sports luncheon today coach talked about his recruits for next year that have signed letters of intent. I don't remember the names but if they signed LOI's you guys that follow hockey more than I do know who they are. He said that thre will be noticable increase of speed comming in. He is still working on a couple of more that he hopes to sign in the spring signing period.

One think he did say was that representatives of the LA Kings have been to all but 2 or 3 games following the progress of goalie Quick. Hope he sticks around for at least another year.

Only ones I know who have signed are Marcou, Keane, and Grasso. They actually signed a couple years ago. If the school had signees this past fall it's news to me since they didn't put out a release.

One thing regarding Quick is that the Kings picked Jonathan Bernier with the 11th pick last June. Sounds like right now he's rated a little higher on the talent chart than Quick. Bernier is playing in the CHL this year and will probably move on to Manchester (Kings AHL club) next year. If that's the case, Quick may want to hang around UMass and play versus go to Manchester and sit.

James Marcou, USHL Offensive Player of the Week!
Waterloo's leading scorer had four points in three games last week. He had an assist in 4-2 and 3-2 losses to Omaha. He also had a goal (game winner) and an assist in a 3-1 win over Green Bay.

I'm curious if any of these kids will make a Werner-like impact. If someone like Marcou can come in and drop 25 points, that would be huge.
it's easy to root for a winner...

Marcou is starting the all star game....however, so are all his other Blackhawk teammates as the East coaches decide to please the hometown Waterloo fans.

End of one, scoreless. Finally, after watching the NHL and AHL All Star games this week, I watch an all star game with real defense.

Pretty good effort from the future Minutemen. Marcou is very active. Inital reaction is he seems like more of a playmaker than a goalscorer. Had a couple nice passes to try to setup his linemates. Very aggressive on the forecheck and has tried to throw the body around a bit despite his small frame.

Hobbs is the only Ohio Junior Bluejacket represented on the All Star team. Had probably the best opportunity in the 1st. Seems to have a little more size than his teammates, so planted himself in front of the net on the power play, unfortunately was stonewalled on a rebound chance.

UNH got a good recruit in Phil Desimone, someone we were Keeping An Eye On at one time. That guy is everywhere on the ice for the West.

UNH has another nice recruit in Blake "Don't call me Phil" Kessel. Best defensemen on the ice so far IMHO.
