2022-23 Season

Post by InnervisionsUMASS » Wed Mar 23, 2022 7:08 am

Time to start talking about next year. Looks like pretty much everyone is returning... I think the only question mark right now is Destiny? Very good chance for equal or better success.

Anyone have any early insight into the schedule?

I read that the goal next year is to get tougher out of conference games. I would imagine that we would host Columbia (in the WNIT) since I dont think we played them in 2020-21.

Around the A-10, Lisa Stone is out as the coach at Saint Louis. They had a good team for many years but due to injuries, they took a nosedive this year.

It really creates an interesting situation, huh? No disrespect, but I think Destiney did take a very small step back this year, so there is definitely huge upside potential for this team to play further than the 1st weekend in the NCAAW tournament next year.

Wonder what this does to the likes of Kulesza and Brooks who would naturally be the next in line for that starting spot?
Dabo has also been hyped, so wonder who will get the start there? Angelique has been magnificent IMO -- Makenna did get the starting role in the season but switched with Ang sometime in November or December. Harden would be the 4th in line for that spot, so I could see her as a transfer.

Just wonder who all will return to the team next year. I thought everyone played their role extremely well for the most part but with all starters returning, I just wonder who will occupy Tory's infamously short bench? I would hate to lose anyone from this team but really understand it. Hopefully the prospect of two starting spots graduating with Sydney potentially graduating (she's played 4 but has 1 more year of eligibility) will keep a good core around so we don't take a huge step back in 2023-24.

^ I was thinking the same thing. Will the young players stick around if they know Verdi plays a short rotation? Seems to be some good young talent on this team who may want more. Tough spot

I hope Verdi takes advantage of the depth he should have and keeps his starters' minutes reasonable.

He might have the opportunity to go big if he needs to against a team like Notre Dame if Harden has developed enough to contribute. He could rotate Ang, White and Harden at the 4 & 5, giving us 2 players 6'2 or taller on the court all game. Add Sam in at the 3 and we have the size to compete with almost anybody.

Steph and Brooks should be ready for bigger roles next year. Even if they just get 10-15 minutes a game, that's significant enough to keep them involved. I picture Dabo at the 3 or 4 (depends if we go small or big, splitting time with Sam (30-10).

Very hard to speculate at this point and it might be a tough job for Tory to keep everyone happy as Kiko said. Better to have too much talent than not enough. I borrowed that from Captain Obvious.

I will not be surprised if we find one or even two players in the portal. Possibly a taller 2/3 who can run (giving Sam and Taylor some down time), and/or a bigger 4/5 who can defend bigger guards and eat minutes as needed.

Or, do we have those folks now - mentioned above - on that bench that we never see?

I just found this on twitter from last night:

The question: "Where do we need to look to improve the roster?"

Tory Verdi @CoachVerdiUMass
Our depth and perimeter shooting.

Great news on Destiny!

Like that Verdi is talking about depth too... should be interesting to see how that changes, if at all.

I have been trying to follow any roster movement. It seems that there is no movement in either the roster or coaches so far this offseason which is pretty remarkable.

The one change that I would not be surprised to happen is if Mike Leflar gets a head coaching job somewhere.

Are you saying he is too old? He strikes me as pretty young.
Or are you saying it is too late in the year? I was under the impression that a lot of movement happened at the Final Four or shortly thereafter.
