Lost with the final 73 - 62. Season is over. The announcers said that this was our best season in 12 years.

I've been coming 11 years. This was the best team I saw. Announcers said nobody expected us to get this far. They led after 1Q and played hard throughout. Missed some layups and some free throws which would have put us in the game down the stretch. Looked like a totally different team than just about 11 days ago when we were outclassed in the Bronx.

I think there is so much more room to hit the ceiling for this team. Can't wait til next year.

Had hoped for a bit more this season however I'm grateful for the improvement achieved this season. The incoming class should help.
All due respect, and I mean that from the bottom of my heart, I'm gonna pass.

Certainly a better team than many recent teams. The 2 games I saw this year Leiden and Philoxy were the most impressive players.
From the looks of the box score both players had strong games.
Kiko you seemed to have a good feel on the team. What is your opinion. Who else on the team has talent/potential and do we have any recruits coming in that you think have potential to make immediate impact.

Without much to do tonight, I will give a long-winded answer to your question VanMeter :) . For the past decade plus, I have just kind of wandered into the off season wondering why I keep paying attention to a program that was just so awful. After this season, I am so excited for next year even with a slight underachievement. Here is what I look forward to:

1. I just hope Destiney Philoxy does not transfer. I think the Portugal trip will help A LOT. She was out a month plus earlier in the season for a self-inflicted "hot-head" incident from what I hear. She is by far the most exciting player to watch that I have seen in 10+ years. She creates so many opportunities for her AND others and seems to be much better at doing so without turnovers than Hampton-Bey/Perry. The way she ended the year was a huge positive.

2. Bre Hampton-Bey has to be one of the leaders on the team next year but she has some work to do. I think that the ceiling for the team next year will be heavily dependent on her transition to being a leader. She was out of control at times this year (Near end of OOC, Verdi sat her for a game). She fouled out of both A10 playoff games and only played 15 minutes today. The team does seem to play well off her energy and she gives 100% effort every second that she is out there, it just needs to be harnessed and focused better at certain times.

3. Everyone that I've talked to is REALLY high on Sam Breen (Penn State Transfer). I look for her to make contributions and spread the defense so she and Leidel can get more open shots. Having numerous shooters is something that has helped Fordham the past few seasons (If they don't win the A10 tourney, I think they will go to the WNIT for the 3rd straight year). Breen can't play until 2nd semester next year though.

4. I have heard good things about Grace Heeps as well as Ngalakulondi (New Hampshire player of the year).

5. I think the biggest weakness this year was play at Center. Neither Soysal nor Nelson were at full health with their knees. I hope they can get stronger in the offseason to become faster/stronger. Maeve Donnelly is a recruit for next year from Binghamton area. I think right now, she is very similar to a Maggie Mulligan and look for her to be good.

The only thing I worry about moving forward is team morale with so many players able to contribute and not having minutes to go around. Assuming that all come back and healthy, the bench is going to be very long. Keeping the team together for 4+ months when most people are used to more minutes may be a challenge. This did not seem to be a huge problem this year and I think that is because Verdi and his staff run a real good ship.

^^^^

Question -- we have 5 players on scholarship coming in, including one in the second semester. We only have 2 scholarship players leaving, although I believe we also gained a scholly when one of the freshman recruits left the program early in the year, so we have three to give I believe. Do we have 5 scholarships to offer, or are we going to have to see other players leave in order to bring in the 5 new players?

^ I understand that. My question is, how many players are on scholarship that are coming back next year. If it's more than 10, then someone else is going to have to leave. Based on my review of the roster, it looks like they have enough scholarships to cover the incoming class. There are 9 or 10 scholarship players coming back, so we should be good.

I also see 9, maybe 10. With 4 incoming freshmen plus Sam Breen, we are OK and we will have a lot more size.

Thanks for the helpful insight Kiko.

I really hope they keep Philoxy as I was impressed with her in the 2 games I saw early, even though she was not playing large minutes then.

Daynia LaForce has been fired by URI WBB. Her tenure at URI was very similar to Sharon Dawley -- let go a year early from what I'm reading.

In the NCAA Women's Bracket, we played 3 teams that are in the tournament. Bucknell (big loss in Thanksgiving tourney) is a 12 seed against Florida State, Towson (Bad away loss) is a 15 seed playing UConn, and Fordham (2 losses by about 10 each) is a 14 seed playing against Syracuse. I think the biggest shock in the whole bracket is that UConn is a #2 seed.

If we are losing big time to 12-15 seeds, we have some work to do in the off-season. I do think everything is trending in the right direction though in Amherst. Hopefully we can go dancing in the next couple of years!

Probably don't belong here but not sure where to put it. Don't know if you people have heard about it.

North Carolina Women's coach and her top assistant have been suspended the last week or so with pay because of some problems with the team. Either last year or the year before a top recruited player transferred out and this year 2 or 3 more transferred out. Never had anyone transfer out before.
