2018-2019 Season

Post by LS71 » Wed Aug 29, 2018 9:53 am

I noticed a post on Facebook about tryouts for for walk-ons for this year's team.

I have't read much about the prospects for the upcoming season. Obviously I hope that the team continues to improve.

Anyone who knows what's happening please chime in and let us know what you're hearing about the prospects for success this season.

With the out of conference schedule, you'd have to hope they're .500+ overall. It's an ugly lineup with nothing that looks like a marquee game. https://umassathletics.com/schedule.aspx?schedule=431

Somebody might as well post it. The gals ran all over UMass Dartmouth last night. Don't put too much into it. I have felt for years that there is a much smaller number of "good" women basketball players than men. What that leads to is the top 5-10 schools get the high quality talent and are much better than the next 20-30 women's teams. After that there is another drop-off and a large gap between those 20-30 and the rest of D-1. The gals that play DII and DIII are many levels below DI players.

Now they are saying the game is at 5. Can't they make up their mind? I have seen anytime from 4 to 5.

ESPN+ started at 5, the game started at 4:30 or so.

Gals won by 17. Two Freshmen look real good, Philoxy from NYC 16 points and McCoy. The 6 - 5 gal from Turkey looked pretty good also scoring 11 points. Should be a nice team to watch. I will catch when they play Davidson in Jan I think.

Philoxy made a drive and spin move which would a SC top 10 if Zion Williamson didn't play tonight and take up all 10. Impressed by her. Leidel and Hampton-Bey were good and should be the leaders on this team. Leidel looks to have added some strength in the offseason and looked able to put it on the floor better than the previous two years. Big year for Coach Verdi, needs progress and a finish in the top half of the league to give us some hope.

Agreed -- Philoxy's move was beautiful. She's going to be an amazing asset to the program. Bre had a lot fewer foolish turnovers from trying to do too much. Having some size underneath is a nice change -- hope Anil can stay healthy.

Not saying a whole lot, but I've been going to these games since 2008. This is the best team in that time.
I am hoping that this team can get a home playoff game for the first round A10 and then win at least one in Richmond.

I am going to DC for the long weekend -- might have to swing by Towson!

I don't mean to be a jerk about this, but can we stop referring the women's team as 'gals'?

'Ladies' or 'women' make sense but to me 'gals' seems sexist and condescending.

Instead of the 6' 5" 'gal', how about the 6' 5" 'center' or 'player'.

If I'm off base on this, please tell me, but I don't think I am.

I think you're overthinking it a bit. Do you have the same thought when someone says "the boys rebounded well last night?"

^ Would you refer to a player as the 6' 5" boy from [fill in the blank location]?

At best 'gals' is a dated term...and in my view it shows no respect.

What I see generally is that high school players are referred to as 'boys' or 'girls'. College players are referred to as 'men' or 'women'.

Did some googling and according to the Urban Dictionary, gal is a racist term that was used by white men to call black women back in slavery.

If there are any women reading this board, your input would be appreciated.

It's cringey as hell in my view-kinda has that Mad Men slap the secretary on the ass sort of vibe.

Berkie is in his70s. When he was growing up people used the terms guys and gals. I don't believe it's anything more than that but I've certainly been wrong before.

^ Agree with Swampy. Also over 70, that was pretty common language when I was younger. It was guys and gals, no harm intended. We still often refer to the men's team as "guys".
