2017-2018 Season
2017-2018 Season
I had a chance to talk with several member of this year’s team at Thursday’s HOF Showcase event.
Aside from being friendly and accommodating when it came to giving autographs, what impressed me was being confidence. It’s clear that they love their coach and as many of them said, unprompted I might add...we have a great team!
Their season opener is the fist game of a men-women double header on Friday, 11/10.
I’m planning to be there to watch them play!
Go UMass!

Re: 2017-2018 Season
From Coach Verdi at the Sports Luncheon today:
Anil Soysal, a 6'5 center from Turkey, tore her ACL in practice this week and will redshirt. He said she was going to start at the 5 and have Maggie play the 4. Maggie probably goes back to center.
Leah McDerment - Started all 30 games last year - 6.2 points, 5.2 assists, 3.5 rebounds. She is recovering from a stress fracture and will probably play in pain all year. I'm starting to think there is a jinx over the Champions Center with all the injury problems on both teams.
Bre Hampton-Bey - Verdi singled her out as a player to watch this year. She was originally committed to Michigan. He didn't say what happened but he knew her when he was at Eastern Michigan and was thrilled to get her. She is the starting PG.
He said he has a 2018 recruit (can't use names) who scored 3,000 points in high school and is a better shooter than Hailey. That is saying a lot.

I listened to the women's exhibition game with Kutztown State. The minutewomen won going away. It was tight until midway through the third quarter. I forget the score. They sound like a very scrappy team. Lots of floor burns I imagine. Seems like a good rebounding team.

I don't know what level of competition we faced, but if Genesis Rivera continues to play like this she is all A10. She was fabulous today.

Final score is us75 them 51.
Re: 2017-2018 Season
In the 2 exhibition games, albeit against mediocre competition, Rivera has gone for 24/10 and 19/14 (pts/rebounds). She is athletic and she also has a nice stroke. So far, a great addition by Verdi.

Re: 2017-2018 Season
So does anyone have any info as to what happened to Aerial Starks? She was part of this year’s freshmen class, but has disappeared from the roster. I thought she was highly regarded when her signing was announced.

Re: 2017-2018 Season
This was posted yesterday on an Aerial Starks Facebook page (which seems to be legitimate): "It’s been a full year since I lost my best friend. Not a day goes by that I don’t think about you. I’ve often reflected on what your passing means in my life and I’ve realized that life is too short, and that you need to enjoy every moment. That’s why I’ve decided not to play Basketball anymore at UMass. I have legal obligations and am currently looking for my half brother overseas and I felt like basketball was another stressor in my life, not an outlet. I hope I haven’t disappointed anyone but I had to start making decisions that were best for ME and no one else."

Thanks for the update - I was wondering if her father's passing might have had something to do with this. I wish her the best.

So sorry to hear this and I hope she comes through this OK.
