Coach Tory Verdi

Post by njumass08 » Thu Apr 07, 2016 10:32 pm

Mark Chiarelli just said on Twitter that EMU's Tory Verdi is a possible hire. He also said an announcement will come early next week.

^^

Perfect timing for the new coach to be at the event at the UMass Club next week.

EMU Record for Coach Verdi:
YEAR RECORD POSTSEASON
2015-16 22-12; 10-8 MAC WNIT 2nd round
2014-15 24-13; 11-7 MAC WNIT "Sweet 16"
2013-14 18-14; 7-11 MAC WBI Tournament
2012-13 8-22; 6-10 MAC none
TOTALS 72-61; 34-36 MAC

Well...I guess that's ok. Doesn't have the 'wow' factor. No NCAA appearances.

He does have a couple years as an assistant in the WNBA with the CT Sun. That could be a recruiting draw.
"He helped the Sun to the Eastern Conference title in 2004 and the Eastern Conference finals in 2003."

Mediocre would be a HUGE step up for this program.

Other info on Verdi and the women's hoop hire from Chiarelli:

"Verdi has local ties. He was born in Connecticut and went to Keene State. He was an assistant at Kansas and Nebraska before taking over EMU."

"Expect an official announcement on a women's basketball hire by early next week, at the latest."

I wouldn't expect an announcement over the weekend, so maybe Monday or Tuesday.

He took over a program that was 23-9, 24-13 and 22-9 the three years prior to his arrival. This would be a much tougher task.

Twitter is saying it's confirmed Verdi and the announcement will be tomorrow followed by a formal press conference most likely Monday.

I'd say I know almost nothing about women's basketball coaches so I have no idea and will let his record the next few years be the indicator of whether this is a good hire or not. Haha

Only thing I've seen on twitter so far is one source saying it's a slam dunk hire! I'll take that!

Not necessarily; his predecessor committed a bunch of NCAA violations and the team was given two additional years of probation when he took over.
