My son told me that Renee Ingolia is supposed to broadcasting a game on ESPN this weekend. I went and watched part of the game on ESPN at Montana State and I believe they mentioned UMass defeating Montana State back in the 80's to win the 1 AA championship at that time. Can anyone confirm that?

Berkie - You have few dates jumbled together. Sorting it out:

1. We made the I-AA playoffs in 1978. Did not play Montana or Montana State. Lost in the final to Florida A&M.

2. Won the I-AA championship in 1998. Again, did not play either Montana.

3. Reached the I-AA final in 2006. Lost to App State. Beat Montana on their field (not Montana State) in the semis.

The band was so good at playing it too... Thom had it timed so well... big play by UMass, opposing team calls a time out and then that drum hit and the place would go nuts.

I have to bring this to the top for folks who do not know the story: Today is the 63rd anniversary of Wilt Chamberlain scoring 100. The only known recording was made by Jim Trelease in Van Meter dorm.
Old Cage wrote: Mon May 30, 2016 7:24 am ^ Correct. Jim and I served as dorm counsellors in Van Meter, where he was when he recorded the game. I did not know of the recording at the time.
