Re: 2022 World Cup
Predicted quarterfinal winners:
Brazil, France, Netherlands, Portugal.
I feel pretty good about 3 of 4 of these. Netherlands is a little bit of a stretch, but Argentina has been pretty flaky this tourney.

Re: 2022 World Cup
That seems accurate. I would prefer to have Morocco continue, so there can be someone not from Europe or South America...but Portugal looks like a monster after the Switzerland game.
England vs. France is a classic match-up. Looking forward to that one.

We shall see.. Besides the first match, Argentina has been pretty strong since - it was a wake-up call for them. Spain won the 2010 World Cup after losing their first match as well.Plano Minuteman wrote: ↑Thu Dec 08, 2022 10:03 am Predicted quarterfinal winners:

Either way, I am pumped for the games to start again tomorrow! Lets go!

Re: 2022 World Cup
Hope you're right, Scoop.
Re: 2022 World Cup
New rule for the world cup:
Don't go to penalties (or even just extra time) against Croatia.
In 2018 they won the round of 16 over Spain on penalties, quarters over Russia on penalties, semis over England in extra time.
In 2022, so far they won the round of 16 over Japan on penalties and the quarters over Brazil on penalties.
They're like the anti-England.

Re: 2022 World Cup
Argentina really should have gotten a red card for their behavior late in the second half. A hard challenge and then rocketing the ball directly into the Netherlands bench? Honestly, that guy needed to be out of the match.
Very glad the Netherlands were able to tie it up in the very last minute of stoppage there. Today has been a wonderful day of matches. Both are super exciting.
Of the teams remaining, I'd like to see the Netherlands win it. If not them, Croatia.

Re: 2022 World Cup
I mean the Netherlands Argentina game was the game of the World Cup, a true classic.
The bigger story may be the death of Grant Wahl during the game. The face of US Soccer journalism. Grant has been receiving death threats for wearing a rainbow shirt, I feel that there is more to the story here but I am hoping there wasn’t any foul play. Autopsy is needed immediately.
RIP

^^^^
US better get to the bottom of it, seems very fishy. RIP to grant, just a horrible thing to happen and if it is foul play may his killers be brought to justice.
The games on the field have been amazing. I’m definitely a casual “football” fan but every game has had so much tension and drama. The France England game was unreal. Harry Kane will be replaying that PK in his mind for the rest of his life.

There has to be an investigation into his death. His brother is saying he was receiving death threats and believes he was murdered.
After watching the FIFA doc on Netflix and the corruption that took place for Qatar to get the host bid, you can’t rule out anything.

Re: 2022 World Cup
Pretty awesome tribute to Grant Wahl in Peter King's Monday Morning football column - https://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2 ... a-week-14/ King doesn't shy away from some of the nastiness in Qatar.
Wahl was definitely one of the last great writers for Sports Illustrated. His college basketball mailbag was appointment reading for me. His replacement, Luke Winn, wasn't bad either. Winn wasn't the writer that Wahl was, but he taught me a lot about the next gen stats.
Anyway, about the WC, England englanded it in typical fashion. Went 1 for 4 on my picks. Who saw Morocco coming?

I didn't think Messi would be one game away from the only hole in his resume. Kudos to him.
Think Morocco has a shot tomorrow?

Do they have a shot? As good of what they had before.Plano Minuteman wrote: ↑Tue Dec 13, 2022 4:39 pm I didn't think Messi would be one game away from the only hole in his resume. Kudos to him.

Do I think they'll pull it off? I don't believe so. France is a monster...but hey, they lost to Tunisia.

Re: 2022 World Cup
Yes, it's going to be a monster final! No matter what happens, some of the super club PSG is going to be super happy and some super sad.
Noticed that FOX is extremely good at finding the tearful people in the crowds. Maybe Qatar has developed a tear sensing technology so that they don't waste any potential water source?

A cup of the tears of crying fans is the closest thing to alcohol they offer.Plano Minuteman wrote: ↑Wed Dec 14, 2022 4:24 pm Yes, it's going to be a monster final! No matter what happens, some of the super club PSG is going to be super happy and some super sad.

Hoping France wins their second cup in a row on Sunday!
