STUDENTS KICKED OUT OF SCHOOL
Just saw on the news that UMass has kicked 3 students out of school for not wearing masks at a function off campus.
Re: STUDENTS KICKED OUT OF SCHOOL
Pretty horrendous overreaction by the administration. Hope the parents sue the pants off the school for treating students that pay tuition like that. I’m disgusted.
Re: STUDENTS KICKED OUT OF SCHOOL
I ma sure there is more to this story, but on the surface it sure looks like a case of overkill.
Re: STUDENTS KICKED OUT OF SCHOOL
That’s the whole story. Typical UMass admins completely drunk with power.
Re: STUDENTS KICKED OUT OF SCHOOL
Hard not to side with the students and their parents on this one.

Remember when we were all pissed off about this? Unique time, consequential repercussions.

I was pissed off at the administration that they took such draconian measures back then and again this is the administration acting ridiculously. If we’ve learned anything over the last year these people in power love dictating to the masses on how to live.

Re: STUDENTS KICKED OUT OF SCHOOL
The suspensions look like more of an attack on the Blarney Blowout versus a Covid 19 thing. UMASS and the town of Amherst have struggled with the BB for a long time. Remember when the Amherst PD went all SWAT on the kids? That was a mess. Students are not getting the message (or ignoring it) about the BB- that there will be repercussions.
The students probably have a good case. In the background of the picture, you can see others without masks. It will be hard to justify the suspensions when you look at the celebration when the hockey team came back.
UMASS still struggles mightily with the ZooMass moniker and it does impact the University. Carvel tells the story about why he came up with NewMass. He had a player who he thought was all set to sign on but his parents said they didn't want their son to go to ZooMass. It really pissed him off-he couldn't believe it. I don't know if UMASS will ever get rid of the ZooMass stigma (most large state universities have a similar problem-WVU/Penn St are ridiculous) but this battle goes back far back -even when Bulger was Senate President he attacked ZooMass. Our competition (private universities and NE state schools) love the riots after sports events and the arrests around BB- they tell parents that UMASS is not a safe or academically oriented campus. I think it was the President of UNH who said publicly to his students- "act classy not Umassy".
^That article is trash. While there are solid points- calling a student a loser in caps is more a reflection on the character of the writer than the student. Name calling is not journalism. Someone should smack the writer upside the head.
I still have people immediately call it ZooMass to my face when I mention that I went to UMASS. I want to punch their lights out...but that's just me. (not generally a violent person)

Re: STUDENTS KICKED OUT OF SCHOOL
We can argue the semantics of the kind of language the author used all day and night. Ultimately, he is pointing out the hypocrisy of everyone involved. Students/people who decide that "outing people" for something they deem is wrong are going to have a rude awakening eventually. Karma is a mean and ruthless motherfucker, and will always find you if you need to be found.
Frankly something as blunt and rude and the word LOSER is sometimes exactly what is needed. Would you prefer "insensitive" for a kindler gentler word? Oh no - I am insensitive, how will I ever recover from that. Let's continue removing the spine from our youth...
Re: STUDENTS KICKED OUT OF SCHOOL
I hope the school can find a way to gracefully get out of this mess. It's been horrible publicity for the school and I've seen numerous posts from alums saying they will never donate to UMass again. The telling blow is that CNN and Fox both ran the story and took the same view. That's historic.

Turtleboy is definitely a little crass but he's right on the money with his point. The hypocrisy of the whole thing is ridiculous. The fact that someone narced on their fellow students and this seems to be an accepted practice in today's world is really sad. I thought college students were supposed to stand up to the man not be tattletales to them. I'll lay off the administration if they come out and say yes these three may have broken the off campus mask rules for students (as silly as they still are) but the ridiculous punishment does not fit the minor infraction and the let the girls finish their semester. I won't hold my breath though.

Bringing both sides together. Love it! Do the right thing UMass.69MG wrote: ↑Tue May 11, 2021 10:31 am I hope the school can find a way to gracefully get out of this mess. To be completely honest Quann, I do not know if we agree or disagree on most stuff on this board about hoops etc...Quann wrote: ↑Tue May 11, 2021 10:39 am ^^^^

However, that whole post is SPOT ON and I will never give you shit again (if I have in the past ) !
Re: STUDENTS KICKED OUT OF SCHOOL
Highly doubtful. Given their track record, they will probably double down instead.69MG wrote: ↑Tue May 11, 2021 10:31 am I hope the school can find a way to gracefully get out of this mess.
