Re: 2023-24 Season
Scheduled to follow two hours after the final home football game. They will be giving away several hundred tickets for the pending football bowl game to fans who attend the football/ice hockey doubleheader.TruBluMaroon wrote: ↑Sat Apr 01, 2023 5:47 pm BREAKING: UMass Hockey will be adding an outdoor game to their 2023-24 schedule! this is interseting and telling. Massachusetts Athletics suffers in the attendence department. all those arguments that New England is a pro sports region is horseshit. School of almost 30k never fills its arenas. avg hockey attendance 4429 capacity 8323 the past several seasons this has been an amazing watch. What else more do they have to do to get support. i travel 5 hrs to catch about 6-7 games a year. students cant walk a mile?

Why do you sound surprised by this? Especially related to hockey. Such a weird post.

Re: 2023-24 Season
Sadly its not surprising that Umass has a poor student fan base. Our money making programs are up against the wall w/ fans. just making a comment that the hockey team has had huge success and it has not translated into capacity crowds. There is always chatter that if the teams are any good that the fans would come and support( basketball). Just saying that wont fix the apathy. it goes to the talk of getting into better conference (football/basketball). who would want Umass in their conference?

Again, you seem surprised by the apathy.... this is not new information. I've been beating that dead horse for 20+ years. The general UMass fanbase is, frankly, not great.

Which double confuses me.
"all those arguments that New England is a pro sports region is horseshit."
It is a pro sports region. The whole northeast is. You put it on WEEI, WFAN and whatever the sports station in Philly is and I guarantee you the vast majority of the talk will be about the four major pro sports. Go to the midwest or the south and that will most likely change.
You have to be winning here and you'll draw. The die hards are at all games win or lose, the pink hats will show up for the 28-6 basketball or hockey teams. If you're mediocre, nowadays, with every game available on ESPN+ or regular TV, people are passing on coming, where as 15 years ago, you might get some of those at the gate.
It's been this way since I can remember and that is decades.

And the students fall in the pink hat category. Many, not all. For hockey, it's a social event before a Friday or Saturday night, night on the town or party at the dorms. It's cool to go to when the teams are winning. It's a drag and no go if they're losing. Thus two seasons ago and the few seasons before COVID, must see, especially more with Makar. This past season, a drag. That's not exclusive to students BTW, but especially with many of them.

There are core fans who’ve been coming out for decades…win or lose.
But for the most part, and it’s been consistent over time, if UMass wins, people show up. If not, they don’t.

Mullins is a giant arena for college hockey. I wish they could drop down some giant maroon tarps to block off some of the upper sections for most games. Matthews Arena at NU has a capacity of around 4500, so it seems like there are always more people there compared to the same size crowd at Mullins.

Even a bigger cavern for hoops. Go to Agganis and there's you're perfect size hockey arena.cox'n wrote: ↑Tue May 23, 2023 9:35 am Mullins is a giant arena for college hockey. Go across the street and down a bit to the Cage. There's your perfect basketball arena and sure add 1500 seats somehow if you want! Now that's atmosphere.
