Re: 2022-23 Season: Regain the Trophy
Hockey recruiting/commits are very difficult to track with any certainty.First, players make commitments significantly earlier than all of the other sports. Coaches can’t make comments on recruits until they sign a Letter of Intent, which brings us to our send issue, hockey doesn’t use the LOI with the same effect as the other sports, if at all. So, when a player makes a commitment for UM in 2024-25, there isn’t anything formal that the UM staff even wants to offer the player. And the staff can’t comment, either way; “This player will be an impact player the moment they arrive!”, or , “If we give this player a scholarship, somebody should take my job!”. I did some unofficial, unverified research that shows that twelve (12) commits that one of the recruiting services had as UM - ‘21 -‘22 did not arrive on that schedule. Some may come for ‘22 - ‘23 some may never come! The above referenced goalie is in that group.

This would shore up the goalie uncertainty for a year.

^ I recognized his mother’s name from my younger days and limited hockey experience! Is he transferring……..again?
Re: 2022-23 Season: Regain the Trophy
Yes, in portal. I say get him and play it safe. We've lost legendary goalies. Bring in two guys with experience and let the competition begin. HE is too strong to take chances in net.

Purcell has unfortunately suffered serious injuries the last two years, one in Youngtown and again this year in Penticton. The injury is Youngstown was a hip injury, I believe the one this year in Penticton is also a hip injuryOld Cage wrote: ↑Fri Apr 08, 2022 8:21 am Whoa! He's 6'7" and if you are having significant hip problems at this young an age at that height it's a serious concern. It may be why he was never drafted and it may end his hockey career prior to him ever getting to the NCAA
He may still come to UMass but with the Minutemen adding Brady as a transfer the impression to me at least is that he probably won't. Most schools have three goaltenders on the roster with the 3rd often being a walk-on. With Pavicich, Brady and Graham that is UMass' current situation for the next couple of seasons at least

Look forward to finding out the date for that game.

Juniors play under different rules than the NHL or NCAA. It's "USA Hockey" rules. I've been a referee in USA Hockey for 10 years and it's likely called a lot tighter as checking rules are a lot tighter in USA Hockey vs NCAA. You can't extend your hands to deliver a check anymore or "finish" a check. I haven't been calling this one as much, but you also need to keep your stick on the ice when delivering a check now. Basically they want you "separating body from puck." This leads to more penalties.DoctorJ wrote: ↑Mon Mar 28, 2022 3:16 pm Current list of recruits looks interesting. Again, I am concerned about the goalie's stats. Pav looked decent this year.
The recruiting list has some talent. I think coach is gunning for some scorers. We need that.
I do see a ton of penalty minutes. Do Jrs refs call everything or is coach trying to build in the image of Sinden and Cherry's Bruins of the 70s?
