Avs 1st to the finals…5 point night for Makar as for they swept the Oilers 6-5 in OT.

Hoping they play the Rangers…for max UMass alum representation on the ice! 8)

Right now I would put him in a class with Ray Bourque. Having watched #4 for the Bruins I have a hard time putting anyone else at that level. However, if Cale keeps this up we might start calling him Mak-Orr. :D

His playoff "beard" looks a little sparse

MassLive: "During TNT’s postgame show Monday night, Hall of Famer Wayne Gretzky said he was highly impressed by Makar’s performance and compared him to a Boston Bruins legend and one of the greatest defensemen of all time.

“I would say probably, the closest player we’ve ever seen that offensively and defensively can make an impact on the game that much, probably Bobby Orr,” Gretzky said about Makar’s game."
"Jack didn’t have any envy in him," Calipari said. "He was the greatest coach to ever coach here."

Nice write-up on how key Makar (among 9 total moves) was to building the Avs into the incredible team they are today:

More on Cale + Orr + now Curry:

https://www.nytimes.com/2022/06/17/spor ... y-cup.html

"Is Avalanche Defenseman Cale Makar the Stephen Curry of Hockey?"

"Patrick Roy said Makar could become the best defenseman in history, suggesting he might surpass Orr."

And...a couple of UMass mentions in the story.
"Jack didn’t have any envy in him," Calipari said. "He was the greatest coach to ever coach here."

Here's his shorthanded goal. Saw this a few times when he was here:

Hobey Baker, Calder and now Norris…not bad for a 23-year old!

Should the Avs win the cup, basically everyone is predicting Makar to take the Smythe: https://fansided.com/betsided/posts/nhl ... s-favorite

He'd be the second Minuteman to take home the award in a decade, as Quick won it in 2012 (so 2 out of 11 winners in that timespan).

Even more impressive to me is that people continue make Bobby Orr references when talking about him.

Congrats Cale! Congrats to the Avs…and go UMass!
