UMass Boxing

Post by LS71 » Sun Nov 12, 2017 8:32 pm

I haven’t been able to find anything about last night’s Collegiate Fight Night in Winchester, but this was in yesterday’s Springield paper:

From the Springfield paper’s Garry Brown:

BORDER BOXING: Coach Rocky Snow's University of Massachusetts boxers won six of the eight bouts against University of Connecticut foes to retained the "Battle of the Border" trophy in matches last Saturday at the Forest Park middle school.

Ian Ireland of UMass, a light-heavyweight from Longmeadow, won "fighter of the night" honors for his strong showing against Chris Dunhill of UConn. Ian is the son of Pat Ireland, a five-time Golden Gloves champion who later had a pro boxing career. Pat now helps Snow with the training of UMass fighters.

Osiris Terry, a UMass light heavyweight from Medfield, defeated Xavier Arriga of UConn in a stirring matchup that earned "fight of the night" recognition.

Ashraful Rahman, Meiya Berkey, Christian Moura and Jacob Cohen also won for the UMass team, which gets right back into action tonight at "Collegiate Fight Night," starting at 7p.m. at the Maurer Auditorium in Winchester.

The Minutemen will be part of a New England contingent that also will include fighters from the Coast Guard Academy, UConn, Trinity College and Harvard. The New Englanders will go against the West Point boxing team on a 10-bout card

UMass will launch its intercollegiate schedule Dec. 2 in the West Point Invitational at the U.S. Military Academy.

When we start to consistently play UConn in Football, and if we ever play them in Basketball again, I would love to use the name "Battle of the Border".
