Re: Game Five: EMU
The assistants on this staff don’t have long-term contracts. If the season ended today, Steve Casula would have a tough time proving he should be brought back.
Everybody sees that this is not the most talented of teams, but I certainly believe this offense is capable of more and coaching is a problem.

8-18 for 87 yards and a pick blowsTheInsider wrote: ↑Sat Oct 01, 2022 4:31 pmWhile not being the best, Gino has shown he can throw it a little.. they can't pass because they don't call passing plays. And we lost because of a bunch of dumb penalties and an unimaginative OC

Up 13-0.
Final score 13-20.
Never fun.

Re: Game Five: EMU
Although Campiotti obviously has limitations, I don't think that the poor performance of the passing game should be laid entirely at his feet. Except for the trick play that went for big yards, I saw very few passing plays (of those thrown more than a few yards downfield) in which the receiver had much if any separation. That makes it really tough, both in terms of completing the pass because you're throwing into a tight window and in terms in getting any YAC. Lack of separation can be the result of (1) insufficient speed on the part of the receivers, (2) poor play conception, and/or (3) poor running of the designated route. I don't think that #1 is the case, so that leaves 2 and 3, both of which can be attributed (at least partly, in the case of 3), to coaching. So I think it's not just a problem with Casula, but possibly also with the coaching that the receivers are getting.

Second best was not seeing the confused, fat assed Casula's on the sideline. Brown must have sent him to the booth. He still stinks!
Re: Game Five: EMU
I think they were down to 1 sec so needed to take the timeout vs the penalty

Looks worse when you factor in a 41 yard completion.stevemaz wrote: ↑Sat Oct 01, 2022 5:12 pm8-18 for 87 yards and a pick blowsTheInsider wrote: ↑Sat Oct 01, 2022 4:31 pmWhile not being the best, Gino has shown he can throw it a little.. they can't pass because they don't call passing plays. Eliminate that pass and UM threw the ball 17 times and gained 46 yards.
Better off taking the tight ends and moving them to wide out, take a couple of back-up tackles and make them tight ends and run every down. My wishbone looks more viable every time out

Re: Game Five: EMU
I have no doubt Don Brown is a good coach and was an entirely appropriate choice by Bamford. I am also certain that after 3 or 4 years he can get us to Whipple 2 and, with a little luck, an every three year appearance in the Legal Seafood Bowl. Throughout, we will all cheer on the flagship, or at least I hope. I love UMass and I love its football past. But I’d rather watch them celebrate a lower division champ while we all got excited about hoop and hockey season. Marcel Shipp will always mean more to me than some forgettable back on a 1-11 “big time” team. It doesn’t have to be everything. It really doesn’t.
Re: Game Five: EMU
Joleon I understand your point but it doesn't have to be a 1-11 team. The hires outside of Whip were bad and really dug a deep hole. I think DB knows how to build this, but it will take a bit of time. Already the D looks better, and the OLine has started to gel. Get a few more key pieces and they can do more. Get the program moving forward again and it looks better. Who leads the program is just as important as getting good players. They can do this

I understand, Floyd. I do. And you know you have my respect. But my point is that I’m not sure a steady 4-8 with the occasional 7-5 mixed in is all that great of an aspiration.

Re: Game Five: EMU
Yep. No passing game whatsoever
Re: Game Five: EMU
I still like what I saw out of Gino today. He didn’t have to throw much in the first half and they finally controlled the clock which was great to see. I hope they still stay with him going forward. If they open it up a little on offense I think his passing stats will improve. I thought the o line played pretty well today. All in all, it was the best game they played all year, yes better than how they played against fcs stony brook. We shut down a high powered fbs offense for the first 35 mins of the game, the defense played pretty damn well. Tough losing up 13-0 but I am taking a ton of positives out of this game. It was fun watching a Umass football game that was within one score st the end of the game against a solid FBs team.
