Game Five: EMU
Re: Game Five: EMU
Stark and frightening statistics. Through 5 games we've scored 36 points and given up 148. Last year, with a tougher schedule, it was 73 points scored and 236 given up. The offense didn't lose much from last year and the players brought in should have meant at least modest improvement. Casula's got this thing in reverse.

Passing is a problem; but having your top 4 running backs combine for ZERO Touchdowns should also be a problem!km109 wrote: ↑Sat Oct 01, 2022 6:40 pm Stark and frightening statistics. I can’t believe the amount of negativity on this board after seeing the best overall game for a Umass football team in years. Did most of you guys not actually watch this game today?
Re: Game Five: EMU
I see your point and its well taken. I think this college football thing is all about money, and FBS is where its at.JoleonLescottsHair wrote: ↑Sat Oct 01, 2022 6:25 pm I understand, Floyd. I do. And you know you have my respect. But my point is that I’m not sure a steady 4-8 with the occasional 7-5 mixed in is all that great of an aspiration.
I think if BC can win in the Northeast, then so can UMass, but we have to get there and build it first. I think the initial jump was a blunder, they should have only settled on a proven, experienced coach to kick it off instead of trying to find a discount leader. Its a good lesson in you get what you pay for. I think the benefits of the exposure for UMass and the possibility of Bowl compensation is a good thing but its not something you can do half assed. Weren't there big financial losses for the program in FCS?
You make a good point . Although I can't see football making a run like the hoops team did to the Final Four, I think they can be a competitive program and offset the costs as well. Hopefully anyway

Dude, enough. We’re not dropping back to FCS, get over it.JoleonLescottsHair wrote: ↑Sat Oct 01, 2022 6:09 pm I have no doubt Don Brown is a good coach and was an entirely appropriate choice by Bamford. I am also certain that after 3 or 4 years he can get us to Whipple 2 and, with a little luck, an every three year appearance in the Legal Seafood Bowl. Throughout, we will all cheer on the flagship, or at least I hope. I love UMass and I love its football past. But I’d rather watch them celebrate a lower division champ while we all got excited about hoop and hockey season. Marcel Shipp will always mean more to me than some forgettable back on a 1-11 “big time” team. It doesn’t have to be everything. It really doesn’t.

Re: Game Five: EMU
I don’t think many posters actually watched the game. For the few of us crazies who still watch, I would expect more rational responses. The defense looked like a legit college defense for most of the game. Their first half performance is what playoff teams strive to be. 2 takeaways, 3 punts, and the opponent never gets into your own zone.
The sack by Mackie in the 3rd might have been the best defensive play of the last few years.
The offense is high school level. I’ll second the wishbone. The triple option isn’t much different than the qb design runs they are currently running every play.

They tired to hire a proven leader, Mark Whipple turned down the job in whatever, and they hired Molnar.Floyd wrote: ↑Sat Oct 01, 2022 7:28 pmI think the initial jump was a blunder, they should have only settled on a proven, experienced coach to kick it off instead of trying to find a discount leader.JoleonLescottsHair wrote: ↑Sat Oct 01, 2022 6:25 pm I understand, Floyd. My only negative comment is I missed most of the first half! The defense looked tough, and I think Gino is a fighter. I echo the option comments. It would be a nice wrinkle to add into the offense.

Hmm. Not sure how you jumped there, but the decision was made to move up and here we are. I support the program and did before the move as well.JoleonLescottsHair wrote: ↑Sat Oct 01, 2022 10:52 pmCan’t you stop disparaging the program’s history?Merlin Samuels wrote: ↑Sat Oct 01, 2022 10:47 pm Can’t you get over the fact we’re not dropping down a division?

UMass has scored 53 points this season. They scored 56 of those 73 at home last season. This is up from the 12 they scored in the four games during the 2020 season

Whip's first season in 2014 they scored 125 in the first five games. Gave up a 200. It was loaded with P5 teams.

Take his advice and ignore. It’s a much better reading experience when you scroll past all of his posts.JoleonLescottsHair wrote: ↑Sat Oct 01, 2022 9:06 pmFeel free to ignore or, well, get over it. That approach seems to already work well for you.
