Toledo Game

Post by dennisdent » Thu Sep 08, 2022 8:27 am

Only scored 37 against a bad LIU program. Have now clue how the game will go. Just looking for any improvement...

I think 17 of those points came in the 4th.. not that ESPN's FPI really means anything this time of year but Tulane is 23 spots higher that Toledo and we arent last! They have a really good Defense and what seems like a not so great offense.. could be a lower scoring game.. just really want to see guys finish plays on D and a little more open on offense.. improvement

Yes. finishing plays on defense will be a good sign. Keep it close.. I expect to lose, but one never knows!

One comment Brown made after the game was that there were players that did not have their feet on the ground and if they did not get them on the ground the would not play for UMass.

Reading Mike's game preview it seems like Toledo is the kind of team Don Brown wants UMass to be. Runs the ball effectively with QB and RBs and a nice short passing game with the ability to break plays. Then the defense sounds rock solid especially with the front 7. This one will get ugly quick unless UMass can throw the ball.

They really need to add a big play threat to the offense. Clearly they aren't going to be an efficient passing offense with lots of easy completions, but the deep ball needs to be a threat to keep the D honest. You saw with Tulane that they didn't need to complete the deep balls, they got plenty of yardage/first downs from pass interference calls. UMass brought in quite a few new WRs this year- send em deep and throw up a few prayers here and there.

While Toledo's D is legit, I think Mike might overvalue their offense just a little bit.. At the end of the 3rd they had only scored 20 points against a bad LIU team that did absolutely nothing on offense. Not sure how much scoring we will do but I don't think Toledo will get into the 40's like he predicts.

This what Massey's ratings has:

LIU Post FCS 0-1 253 Massachusetts FBS 0-1 198

Both schools are pretty similar. I think we score but Toldeo still puts a beat down on us. In Don Brown We Trust. Still predicting 2 or 3 wins.
Vegas has us at 2.5 wins

Still think with this years piece of cake schedule we get 2 wins anyway. Next year we have a fairly similar schedule but the 2 cupcakes are at the beginning: NMSU and Nevada but Miami(Ohio) and Auburn are going to be very tough. Don't like Auburn as #2 game as someone is going to get hurt.

Just found this excellent pre-game report on twitter:

"The UMass Minutemen want to maneuver past being a one-dimensional offense.

The Minutemen efficiently demonstrated the power to run the soccer in final Saturday’s 42-10 loss to Tulane within the season opener at Yulman Stadium.

UMass used a mixture of backs and schemes to hurry the ball for 200 yards and a landing on 58 makes an attempt. Those floor features had been offset by the passing tandem of Gino Campiotti and Brady Olson, who mixed to finish 4-of-11 passes for 17 yards and three interceptions.

Head coach Don Brown and offensive coordinator Steve Casula should set up a manageable steadiness into the sport plan when the Minutemen encounter the Toledo Rockets on Saturday night time (7 p.m.) on the Glass Bowl.

“Obviously the first time through and you make strategic adjustments in your package based on who you are playing,” stated Brown. “In that individual recreation we felt we’d have the power to run the soccer and we did run it for 200 yards."
"Jack didn’t have any envy in him," Calipari said. "He was the greatest coach to ever coach here."

"run the soccer"

Is this the new terminology for running the ball?
All due respect, and I mean that from the bottom of my heart, I'm gonna pass.

"In that individual recreation"

Hitting the bottle this early in the season, huh...

What is this? They changed a few (nonsensical) words from the Herald and called it their own?

Here is my realistic assessment for todays game. I think Toledo will be tough to move the ball against, but I see us completed a few more passes and maybe will have one or two big plays. I think our defense will do a decent to good job in containing Toledo's offense. Game will be closer than last week. Toledo 31 Umass 13.

I have no predictions for today. Let’s keep getting better each week on defense and have some semblance of a passing attack today.
