2022 Prediction

Post by km109 » Sat Jan 01, 2022 9:45 am

Looked at the UMass results from '20 to '21. The point differential improved by 11 per game, from -37.25 to -26.25. The defense actually managed to regress by 3 points per game.

My prediction is that the 2022 team will cut the differential by at least 15 points a game, 9 better on defense, 6 better on offense. Tie that to more experience from existing players, contributions from recruits and certainly to improved coaching. No idea what that will mean for wins and losses, but it will certainly be more entertaining and competitive football.

Schedule on paper is very similar to 2021. 4 games that are 50/50 with 3 of them in a row after the bye. 4-8 should be a realistic goal.

It looks a lot easier to me at the beginning than last year. I'm hoping we don't get as beat up early on next season and can feel a little success earlier on. We'll see.

This is the general range I'm thinking. I think it will take more than one year to really turn this around, but I do sense we'll be way more competitive this year, and three to four wins is not out of the question if we can stay healthy. I'd have a hard time envisioning more than that, but I'm open to being proven wrong. :)

4-7 wins is very possible, IMO. UConn, the two FCS teams, NMSU, Army should all be in play. Temple, Eastern Michigan are slightly out of reach, still I think, but who knows?

I guess. I'd love to see us turn it around to that level, but that isn't my realistic expectation. I'm thinking four wins tops, but I fully expect to be more competitive in our losses. I'm extremely excited about the changes that are happening, I just don't want to jump the gun and think it's all going to happen immediately, If it does, I'll be pleasantly surprised, but I'm not expecting it.

2021 schedule was absolutely brutal in that we started with 2 P5 teams and lost our Portal guys for the year in those losses. In 2022, we've got 1 P5 opponent and it's at the end of the year, not the beginning.

Schedule is much different this year. Arkansas state and Buffalo were not great at all either. Arkansas state had two wins and Buffalo four. As long as the defense improves, and the younger guys develop a bit more. The record and competitiveness of this team should be markedly improved.

Agreed that there are winnable games but we also had 4 games on paper this year and only went 1-3. Breaking down the 2022 schedule, we have the 6 repeat games, Uconn, nmsu, liberty, army, Toledo, emu. Sub a&m for fsu and then we have the 5 other games.

2021 @pitt, @csu, Bc, uri, maine.
2022 @tulane, @temple, @ark st, Buffalo, stony brook.

Tulane is getting replaced by an FCS game. We lost last year primarily due to coaching. There is no way DB loses to FCS teams. All the games should be closer. Better coaching would have won at Army last year. Army is at McGuirk next year. There are 7-8 winnable/competitive games next year. Liberty, a&m, Toledo and EMU are the games likely out of reach still. Win half of the competitive games.

We were 0-2 against FCS this year and haven’t won a road game since 2018. I have faith that DB will be an improvement over Bell, but not ready to say he won’t lose to an FCS team.

Projections of any kind seem premature without knowing who is going to be on the team, who is leaving via portal, etc.

There has been a wholesale emptying of coaching ranks, except for Alex Miller and many of those slots also seem to be empty for now.

getting a 4 star D Line transfer is the kind of move that will transform are sorry ass defense. We have 5 games next year vs fellow bottom 25 teams and Stony Brook. Have a nut sack boys.. 6 wins has to be the goal.
