Hope you are right but the final score is all that matters: we still suck and the OL is horrendous. Our secondary is excellent but our offense is a joke. Yesterday Pitt's DE kept getting around our LT all day and Lytle was getting knocked around. Only possible wins will be against UConn, UMaine, NMSU. Don't know about URI. Granted Pitt is actually a top 35 team but unless the OL gets fixed, it's going to be the same old story: our defense gets gassed by halftime and then we get blown out, week in, week out.stevemaz wrote: ↑Sun Sep 05, 2021 6:36 am My optimism has been increased ten fold as I think the defense is far better than they were two years ago. Sure, they gave up 51, but if the offense was at least decent they would have held them in the 30s. I expect another drubbing next week, but the game vs Eastern Michigan will be competitive and then in week 6 the program officially turns the corner with a trouncing of UConn. Hang in there boys... the Brady "Doug Flutie part 2" Olson era will be a fun one..
Game One: Pitt

Bell quote from the game story in Gazettenet:
“You always learn lessons when you get the sting of a loss,” Bell said. “We got to see somebody with a real fastball, and that’s going to help us next week when we see another team with a fastball.”
That's a lot of lessons at this point. What have they learned?

Let's see what happens vs EMich in a few weeks..
Re: Game One: Pitt
We seemingly have a legit FBS QB and a decent defense for the first time since 2017. Overall the team looks to be improved....not good, but improved. Hopefully they can get better this week and get ready to play BC.

How much "Optimism" can you have when the opposing coach who just clobbered you calls the game a "scrimmage"? . . . more like a skirmish!

Re: Game One: Pitt
Considering that they had at least 7 5th year seniors to a majority of our younger inexperienced players we did pretty well. Did not like the running plays on 1st down up the middle. Thought we should have learned from past years that we don't have the line to do it. However with a game under our belt there should be plenty of film to show where we had problems and work to improve. Hopefully we will be in better shape to put up a better battle against BC.

This bold part is a pretty good summary of the past decade of UMass football in a nut shellstevemaz wrote: ↑Sun Sep 05, 2021 6:36 am My optimism has been increased ten fold as I think the defense is far better than they were two years ago. UMass Football: 22-3 at home when I was a student.

Hard to be optimistic when you lose by 44. Imagine if they played a top 10 team
Re: Game One: Pitt
This is from the coaches poll for week 2, Pitt received 20 top 25 votes, BC 19, Florida State 34, and Liberty 78. Scheduling as an independent gets ugly, but do like our home slate this year. Then the next 3 years we only have 5 home games. Wish we had a conference schedule, perhaps someday.

Re: Game One: Pitt
On what planet can a team build a team/successful brand with only 5 games at home from 2022-2024? That is nuts.
Feeling entitled is JUST a feeling...

Only 11 total games for 2022, 2023 and 2024?

Re: Game One: Pitt
I definitely see more potential wins on the schedule in 22 and 23. If the team turned half decent they could even hit .500.
For now, we can worry about beating 2 FCS teams and the 2 worst FBS teams in the country (not including UMass).
