Re: The Painful Truth-Good Intentions Gone Awry
UMass's reputation is NOT TIED to football in any way. FBS outside P5 + ND is a loser as well.ZooMass84 wrote: ↑Mon Dec 28, 2020 2:55 pmSTUPID STUPID STUPID !!!
FCS is a total money loser and should not even be an option. Flagship universities in a state with a population of greater than 1,000,000 DO NOT play FCS. That’s like saying “ I’m turning down the University of Michigan to go to Route 9 High (mass bay community college)
Feeling entitled is JUST a feeling...
Re: The Painful Truth-Good Intentions Gone Awry
ANOTHER FALSEHOOD!!!! In fact, "FBS outside P5 + ND is a loser as well" is another LIE. Most schools IN THE P5 lose money on football. Of the 65 or so teams in the P5, only 20 or so make money from their football programs. Only the SEC and a few of the Big 10 and ACC makes money. Almost 100% of the G5 loses money on football. Major national universities other than the Ivy League and Univ of Chicago etc. play FBS football. See the USNWR national rankings. Flagship Universities in states with a population bigger than Rhode Island play FBS, not FCS.econalum wrote: ↑Wed Dec 30, 2020 8:02 pmUMass's reputation is NOT TIED to football in any way. Where you are misguided and uninformed is that you don't like the fact UMass plays FBS football at all. You and I have disagreed many times in the past and you spout the same, tired rhetoric: "UMass applications would have increased without FBS football" even though the statistics clearly show that they are positively correlated. College football IS THE MOST VISIBLE "front porch" or advertisement for schools, unless you are in the Big East or WCC and play elite level MBB and don't sponsor football at all. There are very few Georgetown and Gonzaga programs out there.
I will tell you AGAIN: UMass plays FBS football and "the die is cast". The world is not flat and the Earth revolves around the Sun, not the other way around. What you fail to understand is a decision was made and you live with it. That is analogous to saying " the US should not have entered WW2". It's a stupid argument because the US did in fact enter WW2 after Pearl Harbor.
Re: The Painful Truth-Good Intentions Gone Awry
"Good intentions gone awry"..........truer words never spoke!!!! In some aspects UMass is very lucky: 4th richest state in the US, situated in the densely packed Northeast, very corrupt state government. No one since Max Page has ever complained about the FBS move. Dan Shaughnessy complains but he is very jealous that his Holy Cross Crusaders play in the irrelevant Patriot League. We fund our program almost exclusively from Univ contributions (even more than UConn does).
I don't want UMass to drop football but I want us to win a game or two, not these ridiculous blow outs to these schools a lot of people haven't heard of. Walt Bell is clearly NOT an FBS Head Coach. I would love us to win a game or two next year but I fear we're looking at 0-12. Only Idaho moved its program down to FCS and that was because they are in a poor state, in a very remote part of the US, and FBS opponents were tough to travel to. Also they were an independent like us, but had too much going against them. If it's a choice between going back down to FCS or dropping football, I'd rather we drop football.

Not counting the Gillette BC game, will have a winning record at McGuirk in 2021 and if we preform on the OL , QB etc a few more games are possible.
Think 3-5 wins is not a wet dream.

Hitting the bubbly a little early are ya...
By the time the team gets to those "wins" it will be so beaten up and down that I doubt it will have much left in the tank. We have this spring season to see how good Maine and URI are going to be in 2021.

That's why my opinion here is a bit of both of you's. Stay FBS or get rid of the football program completely.econalum wrote: ↑Wed Dec 30, 2020 8:02 pmUMass's reputation is NOT TIED to football in any way. If we scheduled Rhode Island and Maine 9/4 and 9/11 then I would agree with you. Reality is EMU is not the EMU of old and after Whipple hangs 77 on us and BC kicks our ass, you can stick a fork in 2021. 0-12Steve81 wrote: ↑Thu Dec 31, 2020 12:00 pm Not counting the Gillette BC game, will have a winning record at McGuirk in 2021 and if we preform on the OL , QB etc a few more games are possible.
